A belt and pulley system then separated the lint from the seeds. It revolutionized the cotton industry by making it more profitable. A machine was now used to remove seeds from cotton rather than having to remove them by hand. This allowed more cotton to be processed quicker which made production of cotton more efficient for farmers. Prior to the invention of the cotton gin, slavery was actually dying out in the southern United States due to how labor intensive the removal of seeds from cotton had become.
The process of black slavery taking route in colonial Virginia was slow. Black slavery mostly became dominant in the 1680s. Slaves became the main labor system on plantations. The amount of white indentured servants declined so the demand for black slaves became necessary in the mid-1660s. The number of white indentured servants that Virginia had up until the mid 1660s, was enough to meet white peoples labor needs.
The cotton gin impacted the lives of the people of the United States by providing jobs to the American people both to the northern and southern parts. Also, the cotton gin gave textiles to the United States. The cotton gin affected the U.S. politically by dealing with England in not only a trading matter, but also in a manner of discussions for treaties. The cotton gin was not the greatest invention. The lightbulb was the greatest invention because it made it available to see and do things in a more proficient manner than only advancing the cotton
The southern colony and New England Colony had many differences. The New England colony was based more in manufacturing while the southern colony was about agriculture as far as their economy. One big difference is that New England colony didn’t believe in slavery like the southern colonies believed. Slaves and indentured servants were the backbone of the Southern economy. They did much of the labor work for the southern colonies cash crops.
Even though the machine would help the slaves work, they were needed to grow and pick the cotton now that the cotton was such a huge producer. Slaves were a main part of the South, and now that the Cotton Gin was in effect more slaves could not be freed. In fact, plantation owners began to move to larger plantations where they would need even more slaves. Southern farmers did not want to have to go out in the field and do the work that they could buy slaves to do for them. However, the Cotton Gin was a success in the South because it increased the population, and helped the production of Cotton become stronger.
The countries Libya, Iraq, Sudan and all of the other places the refugees of Clarkston came from were at one time very hospitable places and were capable of supporting good lives. The refugees were doing well there- they had family, culture, and in some cases, even wealth to be proud of. They knew how to properly discipline their kids. They had social lives and friends anyone could be happy with. They understood the proper way to socially interact with someone.
However, the cotton gin also sparked the resurgence of Southern slavery, which had been in decline due to the drop in tobacco production. Ironically, Whitney had created the gin in part to help eliminate slavery by reducing the need for slaves to clean cotton (Benson 36). His plan backfired when the growing profitability of cotton actually increased the need for slaves to work as field hands. As Southern planters moved west to acquire more land for planting cotton, they brought their slaves along with them and even purchased more from the tobacco colonies of Maryland and Virginia (“Cotton Kingdom” 75). This shift westwards spread the plantation system of agriculture and rooted the institution of slavery as an integral part of the Southern economy.
