The importance of knowledge of a second language is increasing as the world changes and people of different cultures move to different parts of the world. With the increase of people who do not speak English in the United States, many people are facing the necessity of knowing a second language to be able to communicate with these people. In addition, as students are learning a second language, their critical thinking skills are improving and being developed quicker in the minds of the students. Foreign languages can be introduced to students in a variety of formats to middle school students. Boyson, Semmer, Thompson, and Rosenbusch researched the idea of beginning foreign language instruction in kindergarten. To effectively learn a foreign language, the language should be used in most of the classroom instruction time. Moreover, when teaching students who are not overly fluent in a language, the best way to instruct the students is through a scaffolding technique. Boyson, Semmer, Thompson, and Rosenbusch measured the growth of students who started foreign language instruction in kindergarten and students who started in middle school. They measured these students based on the success and growth though a language proficiency assessment. In addition, the effect of content area language in the classroom of different classrooms is an influential aspect in many classrooms.
