A Yi’s novel, A Perfect Crime illustrates the life of a troubled teen spectacularly. The main character, whom we eventually find out is named Su, had a thirst for blood that needed to be quenched. Su invited one his only friends to his house one day, a talented violinist who goes to his school. He murdered his friend brutally, stuffed her into a washing machine, and fled town. Immediately, Su wanted to hide himself in the crowds of China’s streets to evade any sort of punishment, which is generally quite harsh in China. The use of glasses in A Yi's, A Perfect Crime, symbolizes secrecy when the main character, Su, is on the run through China’s most densely populated cities.
In the beginning of the story, glasses were used by the main character, Su, to hide his identity. In the start of the story, when pondering what to buy as a disguise, Su said, “the more you try to disguise yourself, the more you stick out, so I chose a pair of normal glasses instead of sunglasses”. (Page 1) This new look not only gave him a new identity, but also the confidence to hide from the police. This is when he committed the murder against one of his only friends and decided to go on the run. The punishment for murder in China is quite harsh. Even daily

Soon after Su’s family arrived back home, where the murder took place, they alerted officials. Su knew that this would happen, so he put on his new outfit and hopped on the next train out of his town. This is the point when paranoia started to get the best of him. He saw officials on the train, and that really spooked him, so he decided to hide in the train’s bathroom. Soon after he went in, vicious knocking on the bathroom door occurred. “Saboteur”, written by Ha Jin exposes a difficult period in post-revolutionary China and the negative consequences on people’s lives. Mr. Chiu, a scholar who does not view himself as a common citizen, was wrongfully arrested while on honeymoon with his bride. As an egotistical man who thinks he is above everyone else, Mr. Chiu is arrogant and never takes ownership for his actions. This machoism subjects Mr. Chui to maltreatment from the police that ironically transforms the once seemingly innocent Mr. Chiu to a man consumed by vengeance. Ha Jin’s proficient use of ironic tone and conflict told through the omniscient view of his main character reinforces the story’s main theme: life experiences shape our character and have the power to transform us into a person we despise.

Another struggle they had to overcome was when their mom made money and dad would steal it to support his drinking habit but yet they still forgave dad. Mom also loses her job because she did not want to do it, she thought teaching was hard so the kids had to deal with their Mom’s dream to be an artist, not a teacher she ditches her teaching job for a low paying job because it made her happy because of this it made it hard for the kids to live a easy life but yet they still forgave mom.

The Dark-Lensed Glasses The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is full of symbols that represent the narrator’s struggle to live up to his identity. Ralph Ellison, out of the symbols in the novel, used a few very clever ones. The narrator at one point in the book buys some glasses and wears a hat. Although it may seem very normal, it is important because of his reasons.
