The Importance Of Good Grades

Journalist Mark Frauenfelder once wrote, “In school, we learn that mistakes translate into bad grades. This unfortunate lesson gets burned into our brains, and we go through life shunning challenges that might end in failure” (Frauenfelder 1). Students around the world are told by their teachers, parents, peers, and/or elders that if they do not meet a certain percentage or grade in their classes, they will not succeed in their lives. Students who do not have good grades are seen as less intelligent than students who do have good grades. This opinion gives students the impression that if they earn a bad grade in a class, they are considered unintelligent and are failures. However, a student’s grades should not measure his or her intelligence, but his or her motivation and work ethic towards his or her work. A student’s grades should not measure his or her intelligence because there may be factors affecting his or her learning. He or she may also have a hard time when it comes to concentrating or remembering information. As well as factors that may affect learning and troubles that a student may have with concentrating and remembering information, a student’s grades should not measure his or her intelligence because of the difference between intelligence and effort that not everyone understands. People who pressure others about their grades must realize that getting good grades on a test or in a class will not mean anything if they cannot apply the material that they learned
