Remember the basics
Location
Find a charming spot with a majestic landscape that is easily accessible and safe. The length of the hiking route must match your family’s interests and abilities – including the terrain.
Water and Snacks
Pack enough water; many experts recommend one litre per person per hour of hiking. If you’re aware of a stop in the middle, consider replenishing your stocks there instead of lugging water throughout. Make sure to carry enough snacks and food.
Clothing
Wear hiking boots or comfortable shoes and tie your laces tightly – loose laces can be an annoyance and cause you to slip and get injured. Since you will be in your shoes a long time, make sure that they are comfortable, with thick, supportive soles, and that the socks are appropriate. Don’t forget comfortable clothing, hats and sunglasses, if required
Other essentials
Depending on the terrain and vegetation, consider carrying gloves or a stick. Carry a basic first aid kit and medical supplies for emergencies. Don’t forget your camera – capturing some of the beautiful sights you see and saving them for posterity is a great

“Once More to the Lake” by E.B White, and “Summerland” by Peter Jon Lindberg are examples of great traveling experiences “to lose and find ourselves.” In these essays there is not any travel solely for adventure, but mostly for a tradition. They show us that traveling does not really need to be just “about the unfamiliar, the discovered, the passport full of stamps” (Lindberg), but may also be to regret nothing from the trip, even if it was unexpected. In his essay, White addressed his most hidden thoughts and feelings about mortality in a beautiful way, which leads him to lose and find himself. His flashback began the first time White brought his son to the lake in Maine where, after many years since he had come with his father for summer vacation, he became confused by his role.

Three years before I actually made it to India, I was sixteen and set out to go to Lhasa. Soñath monastery had been my home since I was eight but I never found it difficult to leave. My friend and I boarded the bus that went from Soñath to Hoyen to Corgay to Labrong to Gompang to Lhasa. Exiting the bus in Lhasa I practically shouted: “Where can we find a guide to India?”
India is indeed a beautiful country with smart people, gorgeous land and buildings, great food, and traditions and cultures that are worth preserving. It’s just the traditional beliefs of some people that I despised. Still, after a year of being back, I believed that I wasted five years of my life in India and that I hadn’t learned anything. Now, I realize that I learned more from India than I originally thought. No one could tell me what I could or couldn't do, and I am the creator of my future.
