The job of a historian is to investigate what happened in the past based on the evidence that’s available. Historians often work at universities, libraries, government agencies or some may be freelancers. George Santayana said “Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it”, this quote really highlights the importance of historians in today’s society. They help us understand past events and conflicts so we do not repeat them, they guide us away from histories mistakes and towards a better future. A historian reconstructs the past using current evidence; they use sources to find the evidence. There are many different types of sources. Sources can be written, visual or oral. Each source must be judged in relation to what’s …show more content…
They should have an awareness of a range of viewpoints and how to cope with this; an appreciation of the range of problems involved in interpreting complex, ambiguous, conflicting and often incomplete material is needed; a feeling for the limitations of knowledge and the dangers of simplistic explanations should also be on the top of their minds when deciding to use a source or not.
Historians study from many different times of history. Often they study period history. This is when they chose a specific time in history and specialise in it, for example some historians might specialise in the medieval Ireland period and another historian might specialise in the rule of Stalin in communist Russia. Some historians might choose to study a time in history that’s not commonly talked about, maybe a historical event that happened in their town or city. Other historians chose to study various organisations and establishments like the military or the social history of a certain

History involves encountering and sensing the past 's otherness and learning to understand unfamiliar structures, cultures and belief systems. These forms of understanding shed important light on the influence of the past on the present, understanding the past is key to bettering the future.
Intellectual independence is a necessary skill if you’re a historian. Studying history is not simply a preparation for researching different people and events in history, instead it incorporates general research skills - the ability to set tasks and solve problems. This involves: bibliographic skills; ability to gather, sift, select, organise and synthesise large quantities of evidence; ability to formulate appropriate questions and to provide answers to them using valid and relevant evidence and argument The primary role of a historian is to present the world with their findings. To carry out this task they must take on the role of a narrator. They have to show their information in an organised
Unlike traditional historians who wanted accurate and objective historical accounts, New Historians are more concerned with the representation of historical events and their cultural revelations. Considering each interpretation valid, they explore various interpretations of texts based on the historical context of that time period. New Historicism argues that history is not linear and repeats itself. As Capote said, “murder was a theme not likely to darken and yellow with time”, meaning that there might be numerous murders with various classes; however, they all have the same tone of tragedy and will forever be present in human society. However, New Historians would argue that murder in literature has different interpretations defending on your culture and time period.
Propaganda posters during World War II were used to address issues to citizens. In the article “History as Historical Documents”, by Rodney F. Allen, it was stated a good poster is one that communicates a clear message and draws the attention of the viewer (1). These posters were able to influence a lot of citizens to make sacrifices and decisions to help the troops while addressing controversial topics. One of the well-known propaganda posters was “We Can Do It”, with Rosie the Riveter. Rosie the Riveter was a strong and competent factory worker in jeans and a bandanna and urged women to fill jobs that men had to leave for the war (Olsen).
Writing Prompt #1 The way we perceive history are through the eyes of those who write it, but we also have no knowledge if they’re being biased or not. In Frances G. Couvares’ work Interpretations of American History, he talks about historiography and how historians write history. This essay will talk about the providential, the rationalist, the nationalist, and the the professional, the four stages that helped shape how we write American history and the importance it has to historiography.
Module Four: Thinking like a Historian Part One Compare the views of these two scholars by answering the following questions. Be sure to find specific examples in the selections to support your answers. 1.) What issues that surround Latino immigration to America does each author address?
While reading Kathryn Walbert’s essay on primary sources I learned many important things. The first thing I learned was that primary sources are anything created for the purpose of studying that was created in historical times. The second thing I learned is that primary sources are important to read about because they are very important keys to what life was like in the past. This is very important because it gives you an in depth understanding of how life was and gives you more information on what you are trying to study. The third thing that I learned was that simply because something is made now from the historical time period doesn’t make that item a primary source.
Historiography is the study of how history is written and the different perspectives of the past provided by different historians. Revolutions and wars are main events that historians love to pick apart due to so many different point of views or conclusions that they can assume. The Loyalists position on the revolution was, “...more sympathetic to Britain and more antagonistic to those responsible for the revolution” (American Revolution Historiography). Whig historians on the other hand, saw the revolution as a journey of progress and advancement. The Progressives, a new breed of historians, said that the revolution was based by economic factors and self interest.
History, by definition, is made from unchanging facts and events. Despite this, most history books teach the past differently. How can the same information be taught in a way so that the reader gains something different from each text? America Past and Present by Robert A. Divine and A Peoples History of the United States by Howard Zinn write about common events and ideas, however, they convey them in both different and similar ways. First contact between Spaniard and Indian is talked about in both books.
The most important thing a historian can do is provide the world with a reliable, sound knowledge of history and the truth in what has happened in our society. Without a solid understanding of where we came from, we cannot understand why things are the way they are, how we got here, and where we’re going. The farther back time goes, the harder it is to know for sure what the absolute facts are, however, there is plenty of evidence to let us know what happened during some of the most important time periods of our nation’s history. In The Last Of The Fathers: James Madison & The Republican Legacy, Drew R. McCoy uses both primary and secondary sources to show us facts about James Madison’s life and how he helped to build America. His use of reliable
In the journal article “ Andrew Jackson versus the Historians”, author Charles G. Sellers explained the various interpretations of Jackson, from the viewpoint of Whig historians and Progressive Historians. These interpretations were based on the policies of Jackson. The Whig historians viewed the former president in a negative way. They considered him arrogant, ignorant, and not fit for being president. Sellers pointed out that it was not just because of “Jackson’s personality…nor was it the general policies he pursued as president”
Meaning what do these sources say and what does the writer want to say about these sources? For avoiding plagiarism use signal phrases to introduce source material or use quotes, making sure in-text citations are used appropriately. I recommend that students show the source than get specific and show a quote, than interpret the source? And why does this information provided prove what the writer is trying to prove.
Historians do their best to figure out what to add and what to keep in them. History is immense and is hard to summarize in just one book. This leads to a lot of important things being left out, but it's not just the historians that have a say. The parents of the children have a say as well and they can be very critical of what gets added and what doesn't. Most parents wouldn't want something such as Tills murder to be explained in such detail to their children.
History is a novel idea that has been a continuous idea throughout our time in class. We have gone over what history means to us, the students; as well as the authors and filmmakers we have studied. For me, before this class, History merely meant what we
Trouillot helps us grasp the idea that it is important to know that the most honest historians will try to tell the story as accurately as possible from the data. At the same time, many parts of the past get “silenced”, being forgotten about, pushed aside or passed over. Trouillot gives beneficial information that can be applied to our own studies about how this selective “silencing”
