Independent learning helps in self discovery. Self discovery is essential in student life particularly while pursuing higher education as it organized the students learning. It even helps students to set goals towards improvements that need to be made. Independent learning is not necessarily for students to work in his or her own at all times (The higher Education Academy, 2013). Thus the ideas of independent learning must be encouraged more in student life as students will have more flexible in time to study and can catch up on other works and it even save teachers time. Students gains more knowledge when they study in the area of their interest as well as it improves communication skills and writing. Therefore independent learning is important in developing organizational skills. Thus students can self direct themselves and able to find their own way and they will value their own work to compare themselves with their friends that are on same level as them (Michie, 2013). There are a variety of ways for the teaching assistant to promote the independent learning: -Setting clear rules and instructions help the child build their confidence. Knowing what to do should encourage them to get on with their tasks or activities independently. -Encouraging group work helps students to develop social skills and communication, encourages them to speak up and present their ideas to their peers which builds their self- esteem and confidence and motivates them to independent learning. -Celebrating successes- Students respond well to praise and are usually motivated to do their best.
Students should realize that they have no one to rely on but themselves to achieve what they wish to. So the next time we are waiting in line in Walmart, we shouldn’t be cursing about how the cashier is too slow, or that they need to open more lines because we are in a hurry.
