It was noon, the month of September was beginning. The thermometer, hanging on the wall next to a poster of a culinary TV show, marked 36 degrees inside an apartment converted into an office space. I was sweating profusely, my armpits felt like a waterfall and my shirt was damp with sweat running down my body during the half hour I’d been waiting there. “The Director is a bit late, but will arrive promptly”, said the secretary, before calling him on the phone, scolding him for not being there in time. He overslept and failed to recall the job interviews he was supposed to conduct with the future interns for his new documentary. I was one of those possible interns. It was rare to see her smile or laugh, but she had a pleasurable smile, so it was delightful to have a glimpse of it. We were colleagues in the vocational training center where we perfected our skills. As she was the best student in our class, her presence there just amplified my edginess and the onset of my sweat glands. “Hi, funny seeing you here!” She said happily. I was taken aback at first, not knowing what to reply, “Hi S. I’m fucked now, right?” Was all I could say. She laughed and told me I was being my foolish self. Even so, I knew that with S. there my chances of staying in that production company would be null. We chatted for a while, reminiscing about our year together at school, remembering our colleagues and asking if anyone had gotten a job yet. It was a seemingly innocent question, but deep down we wished no one had gotten a job before us, “I heard whatsisname got a job as an intern at that cooking show on channel 1,” I recalled. “Really?
