John Keats once wrote that “ if poetry comes not as naturally as the leaves to a tree, it had better not come at all”. This applies in equal measure to any kind of writing even to journalism and journalistic writing. Whether you are interested in writing for a small school newspaper or you’re fulfilling a requirement for school, you will want to write like a professional if you intend to write a good article. So what does it take to write like a real reporter?
You may find it intriguing. Why are poets being quoted to talk about the style and spontaneity of writing? Interestingly, even William Wordsworth, another great poet wrote about the style of writing thus “it is a spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling, emotions recollected in tranquillity”.

Don’t be intimidated by the idea of interviewing important newsworthy people. An interview can be as formal or informal as you want to make it, so relax and have fun with it. Find a few people with strong opinions and write down the responses for accuracy. Also let the interviewee know that you will be quoting him or her.

Any news story would have a headline, body or middle and an end. To be a good story, there should be continuity and uniformity of these three parts. The headline should not be far-fetched but must contain the central point of the story. The lead should lead the story or give an introduction to the contents of the story and finally it should lead to a conclusion or an end.

The headline is the crux of the story that is given at the top. A news story comprises of a headline, the lead or intro, middle and the end. All parts are equally important but it is the headline that serves as a window to the story. It is the first part of a news story that catches the attention of the reader first.
