How might "learning to be free" in one's journal be interpreted? For some students learning to be free in their journals is a way of learning how to be free with themselves Inner freedom does not come easily to many people. Our personality and character is formed and moulded by the life situations that we experience and of course genetics. All humans are born with a desire to survive and we call this the primeval or primitive desire that is inherent in all humanity. Primitive emotions such as love and hate dictate how we will present as adults. Some will cultivate empathic emotions such as sympathy, compassion and gentleness whilst others will present self-oriented emotions and struggle most of their life, in understanding the feelings and intents of others. Our upbringing is determined by the culture that we live in, the love and dedication that our caregivers supply from infanthood and the ‘social network’ around us that provides our interpersonal relationships, both family and extended fellow beings. Children that are raised in open, democratic and loving families are more likely to become stable, confident and empathic

Authenticity characterizes an individual’s behavior to be in accordance with his/her motives and beliefs and also be able to express who he/she really is. (Varga & Guignon, 2014). Authenticity is closely related to self-actualization and individuation. The importance of authenticity is on the rise with the increase in individualism.
