Latin is a high school elective I would like to be added to the school’s curriculum. Why? DIS in my opinion, doesn’t have enough second language options for students to choose from. For an International school to be diverse, the school must have enough options for second language that allows students to choose from. In addition, learning a second language does not only help a student to apply for college, but also aids the student’s resume in the future while applying for jobs. This language that originated from Rome even helps an individual’s development of “political conscienceness” meaning that students are likely to have notable political knowledge even before learning about the subject.Latin isn’t an option for many international schools in Taiwan. Therefore, should be considered as an option even more. Latin not only aids the school for diversity, but also equips a student for future university experiences.

“Latin Helps With English Grammar.” “The Study of Latin Enhances Vocabulary.” “The Study of Latin Introduces Logic.” “Help with phonics.” “People Do Think Differently & Latin can help your children realize not everyone thinks the way they do.” It is also the language that is most closely related to the English language that we study in school. Learning Latin may not guarantee your improvement of your English proficiency. However, it brings insights to young adults who do decide to learn Latin.
Studying Latin may have far more benefits than you have imagined. Including being able to increase critical thinking skills, political insights, advantages in work and college resumes, and as well as diversifying the school community. These are everything that the students can benefit from learning the Latin language. The most essential potion, nevertheless, is how the students cope with their studies and achieve more than what they’re capable of.
Rocio describes her classes being very basic and taught in Spanish which made her feel very comfortable. Although I don’t know much Spanish, I can communicate with them better to some extent. Also, learning a language can help you better understand the culture. In my case, learning Spanish helped me understand the hispanic culture better. Although I believe Spanish helped me, it was very difficult to learn.
I have learned if there is an opportunity for a greater contribution in life, go for it. I am interested in pursuing a place in English 1102 due to my work ethics and my interests in analytical and argumentative writing. In my past three years of high school, I would only take the high level classes in order to challenge myself, but I never knew the true meaning of being in an honors class until I started attending East Mountain. My incentive to be in multiple honor classes started my freshman year. When I started attending East Mountain I experienced an immense amount of reading assignments compared to a regular class, but it didn’t stop me from doing my best.
The film “Speaking in Tongues” (2010) obtained the students, parents, and communities perspective towards bilingual education. The students interviewed were all mainly towards learning how to speak a second language. The students felt they could benefit in learning a second language or in expanding their home language. In the film, Kelly Wong stated she loved speaking Chinese to her grandmother. Kelly could practice, learn, and get corrected by her grandmother while speaking Chinese.
In the essay, “The New Bathroom Policy at English High School”, Espada witnesses the hostile actions thrown to students at school who speak a language other than English. The students have spoken in Spanish to each other and the lunch people overheard them and automatically assumed that the students were talking unpleasant thoughts about them. They told the principal of the school and she agreed to prohibit Spanish at lunchtime. This shows that people don’t have the freedom to be able to speak their second language in public without wondering constantly if there would be any hostile actions towards them. I also believe that people shouldn’t be forced to learn English and they should be able to learn English when they want to.
With nations becoming increasingly connected through mediums like the internet, the world has changed substantially within the last decade. It’s a time where Spanish songs such as Luis Fonsi’s Despacito can top the American music charts, where traveling to the other side of the world takes a few hours instead of weeks, and more importantly, where states like California and Utah are continuing to promote and provide for a growing demand for bilingual education through dual-immersion programs. Although the states have great strides in the right direction, bilingual education should not be encouraged but rather be required for K-12 students. Because bilingual education integrates languages into the student’s lifestyle through instruction, it enriches the lives of children, the adults they will become, and the community to which they will contribute to.

The Romans started from a small piece of land along the Tiber River in central Italy, and within a millenia amassed an unprecedented territory comprising of parts of all 3 known continents of the ‘old world’ and dozens of countries, peoples, cultures, and languages. This massive empire certainly had a large impact on its peoples during its power; however, even today one may find the massive impact of the Roman empire in various languages, governments, and religions all over the globe. Language is one of the most important aspects of a culture. Language dictates how and what people literally and figuratively speak to one another.

It was rather seen as a language spoken day-to-day by the lower-caste society due to it sounding barbaric and lacking the sophistication that foreign languages required. Therefore, teachers must accommodate students who do not necessarily speak the same languages (Moodley, 2013:74 -75). To ensure that student’s education is not compromised, a target language needs to be implemented to ensure that the subject being taught is acknowledged by the learners. However the “language barrier” would also create an opportunity to code-switch, which will benefit learners to a great extent. It will not only eliminate the isolated feelings of students but accommodate their language and cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, a teacher will be able to teach their class to the extent where they will be motivated to learn.
Foreign language should not be required at the elementary level because students need to focus on the core subjects, like math, reading, science and history. That is a lot for a young student to handle and expecting them to learn a language should make it more difficult for a student. The core subjects are more essential in everyday life and can lead to more jobs in the future. Students also might have trouble learning the rules of English along with another language. English and other languages have some similar grammar rules, so they could get them confused when trying to learn the grammar rules of English and learning another language.
