Leaders: What to Look For “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” ~ John Quincy Adams John Quincy Adams’ quote incites some thought. There are undoubtedly high expectations from people placed in positions of authority. A leader has many responsibilities placed on his shoulders. The most important characteristics to look for in a leader are impossible to determine; however, three virtues have been defined to watch for when looking for a leader: integrity, initiative, and inspiration. Integrity is the most crucial characteristic of a leader or any person hoping to one day secure a position of authority. It is the foundation for any form of success. Integrity is based on the idea that actions back up words. A person with integrity will have high moral and ethical standards; he will do everything to the best of his ability. This person will not have to be constantly overseen—whether he or she is going to execute instructions in a timely manner. He has the ability to work well without supervision and can be trusted with tedious tasks. If he commits an act that is less than desirable, he will own up to his mistake instead of trying to hide it until he gets caught. This honorable individual will lead his team in a direction that will encourage the members to be better people—he or she is uplifting in everything that is said and done.
