The Army defines leadership as “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization” (ADP 6-22, 2012, p 1). Every Soldier in the United States Army has leaders they look up to and aspire to be because leader encompass core attributes and characteristics that shape the soldiers around him. For me, that leader is first sergeant (1SG) Stephen Liest because of his presence, character and intellect. His ability to lead, develop, and achieve inspired, shaped and motivated his soldiers to be better for themselves and for the organization. These competencies and attributes left a lasting impression, which formed the basis of the legacy I wish to leave behind. I first …show more content…
The Soldiers in the section reacted negatively to marching around in formation, which was normal for anything that was not a job specific task. After the training, rather than conducting an after action review, 1SG Liest explained why he chose drill and ceremony for the first training event. He stated, “discipline applies to all aspects of Army service, from ensuring your room was clean to making it to formation on time.” He even addressed how it applies to our jobs as intelligence analysts by following the rules and regulations that govern our profession. I took this lesson to heart and it was in that moment that I realized I would never forget 1SG Liest. The lessons that he taught me and continued to teach me during the time we worked together continue to shape my leadership style.
1SG Liest’s character went beyond that of the day-to-day operations of the section. He organized multiple events to raise money for various charities and he encouraged the section to participate in these events to establish outreach in the community. His character touched and spread to the soldiers and this allowed his legacy to continue on in future generations of soldiers of that unit

Previous leaders I had were very intelligent in the technical aspects of their job. They offered instruction on the critical tasks that made a successful intelligence analyst but 1SG Liest possessed a wealth of knowledge beyond that of an intelligence sergeant. He drew on knowledge from his previous experiences and duty positions to educate his soldiers, enhancing both technical and tactical proficiency. He went out of his of his way to ensure he developed soldiers who were well rounded and capable of performing all tasks that might be required as a soldier in the United States
This statement given in the early part of the book represents the entire story is basically the lesson for book that I am able to take with me into my preferred field. Leaders are able to get a sense of learning how to properly manage plans and to understand how to better route situations that lead to less casualties. Which is the main focus of the book the military not being able to have a control of situations therefore making the
As conflict arises a nation may enter into a state of destruction and violence, leading to the prominence of admirable leaders characterized by their ingenuity, ideals and admirable attributes. The American Civil War was an imperative and decisive series of battles that lead to the creation of resolutions regarding the conflict over slavery. With the progression of the war, leaders emerged from the Confederate and Union armies, among the most notable are Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate army, and Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, colonel in the Union army. The strategic decisions and military positions reflect the personal attributes of these prevalent leaders, thus affirming their dexterity and personal emotions. In The Killer Angels, a novel by Michael Shaara, the paralleling and contrasting attributes of Robert E. Lee and Joshua Chamberlain are asserted as their decisions and personalities influence the outcome of the war.
Field Marshal Harold Alexander demonstrated leadership qualities throughout his military career and political career. a. Knowledge. Facts, information and skills acquired through experience or education which gain through the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject is called knowledge. From the lesson of training, I also realized the weight that officers hold when it comes to building trust, motivating, and pushing their soldiers. They are going to expect the utmost level of skill as well as professionalism that you must provide as an officer. In return, it is your right to expect the same level of excellence from your soldiers, being there to push them above the standard and holding them to being experts and professionals. This is a trait that no matter how skilled you or your soldiers may be, there will always be room for constant improvement and
Through the past 11 years that I have been an enlisted Soldier, I have seen the value of leadership and the effect good and poor leadership can have on Soldiers and
In the course of the year, due to the Peer Leadership program, I feel much more motivated. At the beginning, I was insecure and unable to carry out the responsibilities successfully. Many times I found myself out of place and expressing myself was a challenge since I did not feel confident. But I have been able to feel part of a group for the first time in a class at school. I can share with other peers and unwind more easily in front of them and out of class as well.
We all understand how to be a good Soldier. We must not only know those values, we must encompass them. As Dempsey says; (2010) “The Army Ethic begins with the moral values the Army defends” (p. 12). As a Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms, we have a calling. We have been called upon to take care of so many in so many different ways.
Among these five characteristics; military expertise, honorable service, trust, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession, I believe that military expertise and stewardship of the profession are the two characteristics that make a leader excel in the presence of their peers. ADRP 1 defines military expertise as, “Military expertise is the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land power, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission in defense of the American people”. In order to gain trust from your subordinates for them to follow your guidance, a leader must have military expertise. Without being an expert in your field, subordinates will not trust your guidance provided unto them. ADRP 1 defines Stewardship of the Profession as, “Stewardship is the responsibility of Army professionals to ensure the profession maintains its five essential characteristics now and into the future”.
These are just a few of the army values and how they play an important part in an effective leader and follower’s day to day
As leaders, it is important to communicate our priorities and values so that every Soldier knows what is expected. Reading and absorbing this philosophy will give you a solid ground for what is expected from you and what you can expect from me. Rely on the Army values to help you make good decisions. In particular, remember the following values: • Integrity: Having integrity is, to me, one of the most important Army values. Having integrity means you do what is right even when no one else is around.
Furthermore, a study made by Amit et al about leadership-shaping experience found that a group of soldiers who had more leadership experiences were perceived to be leaders compared to those who did not . This points to the fact that exercises in self-development and discipline were key to building leadership qualities. Leaders as mentioned before are role-models in society and when those leadership qualities are nurtured, the society as a whole benefits from them.
Individual Reflective Paper Introduction Leadership, a controversial concept, has been studied for centuries. Scholars who study leadership have argued with the insight of leadership for many decades and finally promote a wide range of understandings of it. This course “values and leadership” introduces the basic principles and concepts about leadership, and provides us with some conceptual knowledge and practical approaches to be an outstanding leaders. I chose to take this course because I am interested in the topic about leadership.
Which mean that they have a higher level of Intellect. There are two types of intellect which are intelligence quotient (IQ) and Emotional quotient (EQ) abilities. A leader 's intellect equate to how he or she can think when put into a harsh environment. A great military leader’s strategy is to think through problems, creating solutions, and making a decision. Thinking comes from a person 's own analytical individual perspective, no one will think or act in the same way as someone else.
I started this course with the belief that the leadership is a conventional concept that assumes a top-down, role-based view of leadership and that traditionally refers to how a one manages people and makes decisions. My understanding of leadership includes specific characteristics that leaders are regarded as having control and power, that leaders are followed because of personal loyalty to the position, not to the individual, and that power is conferred on the leader. In the traditional autocratic/ bureaucratic style of leadership, leaders make the decision and dictate work methods and process and followers are rarely trusted with decisions or important tasks. The decisions taken are in mostly accordance to the book of rules, and there is
During class we discussed about whether its a good or bad thing to end up having a different goal that we have set for ourselves and right away I thought about how I changed some of my goals that I have set for myself. One of the goals I changed was how staying close to my family because I am a very family oriented person but I felt like I had to get out of my comfort zone by choosing to attend Johnson County Community College. I always thought I would make a positive impact in the county that I got raised in. Later on I said to myself that I have to do a greater impact by being a leader outside of my community in order to grow as a person but also a well-rounded leader in regards to living up to different expectations compare to the expectations
