While I have been fortunate to live in four countries, I have never lived in one where I am not fluent in the native language. Thus, if I have the opportunity to study both in Taiwan and Austria, I will be facing a challenge that I have never experienced. To live in a place where mundane obstacles are being aggravated by the language barrier. I am looking forward to that challenge because I believe that this experience can help me build character by encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone. The reason being is that daily chores can turn into life lessons by the challenge of living in cities where I do not speak the native language. In addition, I am captivated by both Taiwanese and Austrian cultures. I believe that each culture has its treasure and a great way for me to learn about them is by living in each city. I believe that living in such a progressive city can be very enriching because it can expand my horizons in term of technology and social development. Also, its great transportation system makes the city very appealing for a study abroad program. Living in a city without a car can be challenging, but Linz, as a railway hub, offers multiple options to mitigate that challenge. The city has a tram, trolleybus and bus network, along with an extensive cycle network, to move around the city without the need of owning a car. In addition, the railway allows you to travel to other main cities not only in Austria but also in other countries such as Germany and Switzerland. I consider this as a great opportunity to experience other European countries’ history, art, music, and way of living. With that being said, moving in a country that is very rich in history and so close to other wonderful countries, can help increase my cultural
Recreation of the China into a small district made it possible for tourists to explore a realistic society of China and its cultures. This attracted more ethnic groups to migrate to the district and San Francisco itself. Chinatown exposed language and culture of Chinese
While, temporarily, it may seem comforting to blend into the background, it would not be sustainable, long term. In this case, it would be more beneficial to seize the opportunity to practice the language in the "real world". Mr. Sedaris illustrated that approaching these scenarios with a sense of humor, can help lessen the severity of an uncomfortable situation or unfamiliar environment. If one chooses to relocate to a new place in order to learn something new, one must accept that things will be different. Moreover, as the author
At school, learning about my nation’s history and where our ancestors came from piqued my interest in experiencing other countries’ cultures. Throughout my elementary and secondary school years, my career
I come from a military background which required me to do a lot of traveling as a child. I lived in Sicily, Italy for about four and a half years before moving back to the United States. Living in two different countries made me flexibility and tolerant which allows me to adapt and respect others cultures while maintaining my own. These qualities proved to be beneficial this previous summer while studying abroad Japan. I find these qualities essential especially for someone seeking to teach abroad, I feel any great teacher should first be a student themselves.
My utilization of the English language and my lexicon improved as I devoured book after book—I wouldn’t say it is the most polished English, but it allows me to be understood and to express myself in another tongue other that my native language. Besides, if you really desire to master something, you ought to practice, practice, practice and that is exactly what I do. As for the city, well, I’m accustomed to rude people, piercing noises and extreme temperatures. But some obstacles can overthrow the pillars that sustain your self-confidence, your sense of going forward and misguide you. For me, it was being
Many people around the globe can speak more than one language. In some countries, like Den-mark, it is required by the government that you learn a foreign language at school. Of course not all countries are as privileged as Denmark. Some people have to reach out themselves if they feel the need to learn a new language. One of those people is 41-year old David Sedaris, who wrote an essay called ‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’ in 2005.
Imagine what it is like to be seven years old moving to a country where you don’t know anyone, you don’t understand the language, and everything seems foreign. When I first arrived to the United States, I didn’t have friends due to my inability to speak English. It wasn’t an easy journey, but my determination to achieve the American Dream gave me strength to keep going. I decided to take English courses during my free time, and now I am a great writer who is fluent in both English and Spanish.
There is an old Moorish proverb that reads, “He who does not travel, does not know the value of man.” That quote resonates deep within me because I have a yearning to use my education to empower those in need. In order to do so, I need to see and experience the world outside of the one I am accustomed to. Curiosity is one of the traits that define the person that I am; because of this trait I always ask questions about the world around me and the people I meet. This is one of the driving forces behind my desire to venture outside of the United States to learn a new language and culture.
"Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris is a relevant article about moving to a new country to learn the language. It explains the difficulties he had faced as a student, and as a foreigner. The article explains the emotions he was feeling during his first days and weeks of being a student in Paris. The authors' goal is to express that even if you struggle with something you can overcome the obstacles. I agree that persistence is very important.
Even before applying for work, I enrolled in the local college and began taking ESL courses. I was amazed at the golden opportunities that this country offered its’ students. I often hear the citizens complain about tuition fees and transportation costs, but I considered myself fortunate when I compared the costs with the colleges and universities at my homeland. I soon learned that I could obtain financial aid to cover my tuition and receive grants. I was given every opportunity to thrive academically and, I was ready to embrace each one of them with great joy and pleasure.
Moving to America brings great opportunity to an individual and their family. When my parents moved to America, success was within their reach. My parents could purse their education and soon find their career. My mother has always explained why she was so relieved when my grandparents first told her that they were moving to America. My mother knew that her and her family will be free, they would not have to live in poverty anymore.
But, living in a multicultural city is by itself a very beneficial exercise not only on a personal level but also in terms of cultural exchange, economic exchange and generating new ideas. One experiences what is called cultural variety when living in a diverse area. He is somehow introduced to new kinds of foods, architectures, arts, music, festivals, religions, mythologies, writings and more of general day-to-day life. These new things would easily open one’s heart and mind to new places, new ideas and new people. According to (Wolfstone, 2010) nowadays all people around the world happily go out and eat Chinese food, use Japanese technology, drive German
Furthermore, i love the feeling I get when I explore new ideas, histories, beliefs, and scenarios. It not only increases my knowledge, but also helps me overcome problems that I am dealing with. I get to experience life’s problems, pleasures, and I come out of my personal bubble to become a better person by exploring new cultures. Travelling is my passion because it’s something that I am not afraid to chase after. I get to learn more and more about myself and I am able to expand my horizons every time I travel.
With the times, individuals from rural areas will learn new viewpoints, languages, performances, concepts and thoughts due to socializing with different backgrounds. They will become more knowledgeable and educated, which can lead to a significant development in different fields in their lives (Leung, Maddux, Galinsky & Chiu, 2008, p.172). According to Neyer & Harzing (2008) (p.10). Urban areas with a mixture of cultures help people to interact with each other 's in an easy and flexible way and overcome many obstacles that obstruct communication. People will choose different
In the following I will talk about why one might want to study abroad. Challenges involved with living abroad. People study abroad because there is something more to gain from just studying in your home country. Students might have different intentions behind studying abroad, but everyone gains a lot of the same things. First of all you get to travel.
