Longevity has always been highly sought after for centuries. China’s first Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259 BC - 210 BC), desired longevity and command his ministers to search for the ultimate elixir of immortality. But before he succeeded, death had already claimed him. I believe many can agree that most of us would want longevity as well, with various reasons such as having more time to take care of our loved ones, to accomplish our dreams or even just to travel around the world. Well it seems like researchers working on this study may have found a lead to the supposed ‘elixir’ to longevity. Strength was tested as they were suspended from a wire and were evaluated for their muscularity and tolerance. Indeed, older mice with ketogenic diet did not portray any expected decrease in strength due to age but have also maintain their muscle mass and were stronger than their control counterparts. Motor ability tests were also conducted and aged mice with ketogenic diets have shown to be much faster and energetic than their control counterparts. As for the mice with reduced carbohydrate diet, as we might have expected, had intermediate results. Hence, demonstrating that ketogenic and reduced carbohydrate diet can increase lifespan and enhance the health in adult mice. However, even though all the mice were fed equal amounts of calories, mice with reduced carbohydrate diet were heavier than the others. Ketogenic diet has been proven through this study to cause the increase in protein levels in the liver and skeletal muscles through a process, protein acetylation. Just like how upgraded machineries in a factory can produce more products within the same period, protein acetylation results similarly where more proteins are produced. This increase in protein levels contributes to the strength maintained in older mice with ketogenic diets. Moreover, a key tumour suppressor protein, p53, levels has risen with the same diet.
