Nowadays, people access Internet, websites in specific, more frequently. However, not everyone knows about what create these websites that they access daily. This essay will provide detailed insight about the markup language, the tool assisting the creation of the web pages, websites.

Definition:
Technically, markup language is defined as a computer language that uses tags to define elements within a document (Markup language, 2011). In other word, markup languages are simply understood as the languages that build the web. There are several of markup languages such as Extensible Markup Language (XML), Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), and Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). Its function is to annotate texts so that the computer can work it out (Singh, 2015). It describes how text is to be structured, laid out, or formatted. It is seem to be the foundation of creating web pages which describe how text is structured, laid out, or formatted. Most of web pages as well as applications nowadays are constructed using markup languages. The most common and useful ones are youtube.com, google.com, wikipedia.org... Accordingly, it is evident that markup language plays a vital role in our modern life. Moreover, other reason that markup languages, such as HTML, became so popular and important is that they provide standards that create the consistency in processing document.
