The definition of problems spans an entire spectrum. “Problems” are things or circumstances that appear to threaten our security, dependability or future accomplishments. Our pursuit of knowledge is often not solely dependent on the desire to solve problems. As such, my knowledge question is “To what extent is solving problems for human societies the main motivation for knowledge construction?” Mathematical knowledge is sometimes pursued for its own sake, for theoretical purposes. For over 300 years, Fermat’s Last Theorem (FLT) has baffled mathematicians due to its duality between simplicity and difficulty. As illustrated with the invention of the digital technology, alcohol and even GM food products, mankind have always been intuitive in utilizing Mathematics, and the Natural Sciences to shape inventions to cater to our needs and improve our daily life. As problems are a phenomenon of our daily lives that arises from the different circumstances that we face day-to-day, the knowledge produced to solve problems is therefore also circumstantial when problems come into existence into our lives. In this light, it is clear that problems are not the main reason to produce knowledge, but knowledge is rather produced to counter problems only when they come into existence. Therefore, this essay exerts that the main reason for knowledge construction could be the innate desire of humans to improve our quality of life or satisfy our natural curiosity. First and foremost, problems are a result of our prior knowledge. The essay title assumes that problems exist in nature, whereas we understand that problems are a result of applied knowledge. The essay title is not whether knowledge is the main motivation for solving problems, but should instead be what is the main motivation in acquiring knowledge in which the applications create
