By censoring them they deny their ability to freely express themselves as people and create huge controversy in the communities of many citizens. One example is comedian George Carlin who was forced to censor the content in his acts because people believed that it was too profane for his fans and other people in the audience. This, of course, created huge controversy due to the fact that forcing people to censor their words is a violation of their first amendment right to free speech. This was such a big deal because the people of America fought for years for that right. Another example is the riots and killings taking place in Ferguson, Missouri.

Parents attempt to protect their children from the outside world, by limiting their exposure to age appropriate language. When parents do this, their children’s knowledge of the outside world may be limited to what parents let their child view. Although some parents may feel that their child needs filtered information and entertainment, others believe that children and teens need to be shown uncensored content.
The government does engage in censoring citizens and the media, just not as directly as what may come to mind when they hear the term censorship. Based upon this, how do we have censorship in the US? Imagine if your life story got banned because it was too graphic and contained excessive coarse language. Well this is the exact situation Jaycee Lee Dugard found herself in with her novel A Stolen Life. Although most believe Dugard should not be in this situation due to the fact that her novel reiterates the ‘stranger danger’ concept, she has a right to tell her story, and the ban keeps her kidnapper’s crime a secret. This novel should be free to read without challenge because it demonstrates the danger of interacting with strangers, it allows Jaycee to reveal her what happened in captivity, and banning it only protects the kidnapper. The United States Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances ( law.cornell.edu) However, historically, government officials and organizations have been “abridging” our freedoms since the inception of this
First we should define censorship in order to discuss its effects and purposes. The Oxford English Dictionary defines censorship as, “The suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.” In this case we are mostly concerned with the censorship of “politically unacceptable” literature. However, Anaya states that reasons such as vulgarity can be used as excuses to ban politically challenging literature.
The government is constantly attempting to take total control over society and its citizens, by regulating what is available, what can and cannot be done, and more. In America, it is believed that the citizens ' First Amendment right to freedom of religion, assembly, press, petition, and speech protects them from being able to be censored by the government and other figures with authority, but that is incorrect. The federal government has censored press on various occasions throughout history, contemporary censorship is practiced in non-governmental organizations and corporations, and in schools, as well as public libraries, books are continuously challenged in hopes of them being removed or banned. Censorship, and the government taking total control of what readers can and cannot read is a danger to society because censorship places limitations on the knowledge and creativity of citizens, hinders their right to freedom of expression, and shelters citizens from the harsh realities that are present in today 's world.
