Mirror mirror on the wall....what do you see? Are you the ‘fairest in all the land’? Or do see your flaws, scrutinizing every imperfection? When we look in the mirror, we fill our minds with questions of self-assurance in an attempt to gain an understanding of our image. While the present world may be far from that of Snow White’s song-filled paradise, just as the evil queen craves to be seen as beautiful, all people yearn for recognition and acceptance. They are motivated by a desire to be seen positively by others, thus altering their behaviour to achieve that goal. The queen qualifies her self-worth by asking for recognition from the mirror, emulating a universal human desire; when we look in the mirror, we seek to see the best version of ourselves, but more so, long for others to see the same.
Drawing from the repeated themes shown in Disney movies, our constant affliction with how others perceive us can shape the way we interact with the world. Both the evil queen to Gaston, while narcissistic and self-absorbed, long to be seen in a positive light – they seek to affirm that their inner selves are reflected in the mirror.
