Singapore modern architecture contains a compact timeline of great transformation from a colony to an independent nation. However, the recognition of modern architecture is very recent because buildings containing historicist or traditional styles held higher values as compared to buildings with modern movements. As a result, modern architectures were left vulnerable to demolition such as the old National Library (1960) due to its lack of merits. For a building to be gazetted as a national monument by PSM, it must be at least 30 years of age evaluated via its architectural, environmental and historical merits. If the building does not contain national historical significance, they will be considered for conservation under URA. The …show more content…
The scrutiny could possibly derive from a stigma that new buildings are more purposeful than old buildings. This stigma may be valid in economic terms, but it neglects cultural value of architecture. Hence, the struggle with economic value and cultural/historical value is discerned in the conservation efforts of modern architecture. One example of the struggle in values of modern architecture is the demolition of old national library where its lack of merits is still questioned by the public of today. Thus, in the next segment, the old national library’s case will discuss the struggle between economic value and cultural/historical value, the contestation between the stakeholders, pro-developments and pro-conservations (Fig. 1) and the relevance of modern architecture within …show more content…
On the other hand, built heritage of today are still facing similar problems because the conundrum of heritage could be the reason for the battles of values. For instance, the Drama Box’s event suggests the struggles with economic and historical/cultural values amongst the audience. Furthermore, it also demonstrates contestation amongst the public instead of a conventional fight such as the government versus public. Therefore, this research will focus on a case study, Pearl Bank Apartments (PBA), a private residential property lauded for its architectural significance. PBA is an interesting case study because it has gone through three unsuccessful enbloc attempts, and it is now seeking for conservation status under URA’S voluntary conservation scheme. If PBA is granted conservation status, conservation in Singapore will reach another milestone. Furthermore, this case study will help us understand Singaporeans’ consciousness towards
Through funding received from membership fees and donations, Sierra Club has become a paramount player in the modern Conservation kineticism. Individuals and organizations across America limpidly understand that contributions to the Sierra Club will be well utilized in
The conservation movement is of great importance due to the fact that it is a way to protect our natural resources, animals, plants, and their homes from being destroyed. Theodore Roosevelt took a stand in order to protect and preserve millions of acres of land and created National Parks. We definitely need conservation due to the fact that there are many resources that are not renewable sources, meaning that they can not be used repeatedly nor can they be naturally replaced. People in society have still managed to destroy and waste useful and valuable things and supplies which is not a wise choice if we are all trying to survive in this economy. This movement certainly made the public aware of the importance behind protecting nature and it’s
The government has passed many conservation policies to protect animals, eco-systems, plants and trees itself and indigenous people’s way of life, but many of these policies get overlooked and require a lot of extra work. How it affects the rest of the world- This action is permanent, and all of the world is targeted as a potential setting for deforestation. It is predicted that the continuing action may result in very few rainforest across the entire globe. Cutting trees can also be harmful to our ozone layer, which protects earth from dangerous radiation.
The need to memorialize events or people is complex; in some cases, monuments honor moments of great achievement, while in other cases, monuments pay homage to deep sacrifice. A monument 's size, location, and materials are all considerations in planning and creating a memorial to the past. In any case, the need to honor or pay homage to a specific person or event is prevalent within society. A monument has to mean something to the society it is place in. The location of a monument is perhaps the most important aspect of creating a successful monument to honor and show respect to a person or event.
web sites” (p. 85). The stories, key points and portraits are the subjects of the heritage websites study in this research. This study will focus on how Texan cultural values are shown in the presentation exhibit on these sites. Thorough explanation referring to narrative accounts shown in the heritage museums to their guests expresses the dominant cultural values of Texan society. This study for the most part concentrates on the stories since they constitute the majority of the data furnished by the heritage sites.
The development of modern day architecture is very fascinating. Even though it has a very significant difference to architecture in the past, it still has many similarities. Many famous buildings we have today still show the same basic designs. For example, the Lincoln Memorial is very similar to the Parthenon.
President Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was known for his love of nature. This was conveyed most strongly in his speeches, such as “Conservation as a National Duty”, in which he advocated for the preservation of natural resources in the interests of the nation and its people. In this speech as well as others he gave during his term as President, he stressed that conservation did not just pertain to preserving natural resources or deferring their exhaustion; rather, it was closely intertwined with the patriotic duty of ensuring that the nation would be able to provide for future generations, and was second only to the “great fundamental questions of morality”. One such example of how Roosevelt connected conservation with morality is found in his “The New Nationalism” speech, given in Osawatomie, Kansas in 1910. Here, he compares the way he believes the nation must behave in terms of conservation to the manner in which a farmer acts in reference to his children and the land that provides for them.
They don’t have to be kept in a public space, but maybe in a museum. Destroying a monument is not erasing

New designs have been adopted since the onset of architecture, and thus, with the concentration of a history of architecture, new phenomenon and innovations are realized that would help in further explanation and address of other necessities in the same sector. A concentration in the History of architecture and landscape architecture as a course incorporates more than one element of
William Murtagh, first keeper of the National Register of Historic Places, once said “at its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future.” Preservation has always been a part of human nature, deeply rooted in our tradition and moral code. There is a profuse amount of ways in which society preserves, some are for selfish reasons but others help us move forward and learn from our past. As the great human race, it can be said that preservation has been our main reason for being the most successful species on the planet. Sigmond Freud was an Austrian neurologist who stated that one of the “deepest essences of human nature” is that of self-preservation.
Light is reflected of the aluminum to the interior walls of the vaults and softly illuminated the gallery space in a soft glow. While the building catches the eye with elements like white travertine walls and heavy concrete vaults, there is no doubt that the natural light illuminating the gallery is the aspect most likely to be considered monumental. This light effect would not be possible without the attention to structure given by Kahn and, therefore, gives merit to Kahn’s claim that monumentality is achieved through
Imagine you live in a world where there are no plants, forest, animals, or oceans all there is in where these things us to be is concrete, landfills of garbage, and buildings. This is what will transpire if we do not protect or wildlife, wildlife conservation is a very important situation as it helps keeps plants and animals off the endangered list. According to the World Wild Life organization there are twenty-six endangered animals and twenty-one critically endangered animals this is very overwhelming as animals are an important part of our environment and ecosystem. With human population increasing at an alarming rate, with the growing rate of humans there is going to be less land for animals and plants, more man-made pollution and plastic debris will go into the oceans, lakes, and streams.
The definition of the concept of Cultural Heritage has developed with history. At present, it doesn’t end at monuments and collection of objects. It also includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants, such as oral traditions, performing arts, special practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge, and practices concerning nature and the universal knowledge & skill to produce traditional crafts. In general, cultural heritage consists of products and processes of a culture that are
Tectonics is defined as the science or art of construction, both in relation to use and artistic design. It refers not just to the activity of making the materially requisite construction that answers certain needs but rather to the activity that raises this construction as an art form. It is concerned with the modeling of material to bring the material into presence - from the physical into the meta-physical world (Maulden, 1986). Since tectonics is primarily concerned with the making of architecture in a modern world, its value is seen as being a partial strategy for an architecture rooted in time and place therefore beginning to bring poetry in construction. Tectonics, however, has the capacity to create depth-ness of context resulting in the implicit story being told by the tectonic expression.
