We use maths in our cooking and budgeting at home. It is good to do family budget and personal savings so that children are exposed and will be able to sharpen their mathematical skills. This has become a virus or like an epidemic to all children in Fiji. This is been part of their educational culture and has been encultured into their habits educational lifestyle. If the primary causes of low numeracy rate in Fiji are the children then we have to look at other relative causes and I see that teachers also share the blame to the declining of Mathematics marks in Fiji. The foundations of everything we build are important, and I believe that the education system have failed to sustain student achievement. This is the result of teaching Mathematical concepts and focusing more on abstract teaching rather. I see that is a need to teach more skill based mathematical concepts which promotes mental mathematics so that children are well equipped with the basic and foundational platform of numeracy.
