Growing knowledge in studies of nursing theory is applied daily in healthcare. Nursing theories provide structure and organization in nursing practices that allow collection of data. Definition and clarification are provided for nursing practices and allow purposes to set the nursing profession separate from other professions. Nursing theories impact design, delivery, and evaluation in direct and indirect healthcare settings. One goal for designing nursing theories is to provide foundation for nursing practices in order to gain more knowledge and provide a pathway for future nursing practice. Nursing theories are developed in steps that help explain the process; statement/proposition development, concept development, and theory construction are the steps involved in nursing theory development. In healthcare, nurses must examine several factors that impact the deveopment of theory. Simplicity is important for understanding of theory; it is often suggested to utilize the same usage of words through out theory development. Theory development is often applied in research and practice. “In nursing, theories stimulate nurse scientists to explore significant problems in the field of nursing” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 82). This exploration increases nursing knowledge which provides results that are then tested. Nursing theory development often provides a guidance in healthcare practice that allow insight to goal driven by research. Jean Watson defined the science of caring in which impacts direct nursing care and utilization of nursing theory. Watson’s theory may be applied using is used a guide to integrate theory and evidence in direct nursing situations. “She describes science of caring as one that encompasses a humanitarian, human science orientation, human caring process, phenomena, and experiences” (Roussel, 2012, p. 18). Her theory is based parts Nightingale and Rogers. The psychologists, Giorgi, Johnson, and Koch, had concepts that were applied to the underpinning of the theory. There are eight concepts that bring the nursing care theory together in a direct utilization, but it not only addresses the physical perspective of nursing but also the holistic and spiritual perspective of nursing care. The concept that is applied in that Watson defines the metaparadigm concepts into three of the four. The first concept that brings attention to direct nursing care is defined in the human being concept. “A valued person to be cared for, resected, nurtured, understood, and assisted” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p.185). This concept may be utilized and applied in diverse populations, cultures, environments, and time.
