Personality Personality is a unique trait that distinguishes one individual from the next. However, there are attributes of personality that are shared and on the basis of these factors an individual will behave in a particular way. The Humanmetrics Jung Tyopology Test assesses four parameters of human personality that include extravert, sensing, thinking and judging. The first criterion, Extraversion – Introversion, signifies the source and direction of a person’s energy expression. After completing the Jung Typology Test, my personality type was ESTJ. This means that the direction I take is from an external influence and I believe information that I attain directly from the external world. In addition, I make my decisions logically and I stick to the plans I make. The paper will illustrate attributes of this personality and the influence they have on nursing …show more content…
Individuals with an ENTJ personality have the same traits in the sense that they thrive on supervision of people. However, the difference is that ENTJs prefer to regulate individuals using their own rules while ESTJs enjoy enforcing rules that have been created by the authorities. This is also a positive trait in nursing leadership as this profession is filled with guidelines and protocols for different situations. Nurses must ensure that they adhere to the guidelines of the hospital as behaving otherwise may result in the in appropriate intervention and cases of malpractice. Therefore, my personality provides me with an advantage in this aspect as a nursing
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
There are elements of type I behavior that I would like to incorporate in my future career, autonomy does work but to a certain extent, they have autonomy during their work hours when they need to check things off on their to do list while caring for the patients, “humans have a desire to be autonomous, self- determined” (Pink 71). They have autonomy when working because they are determined to get their task done. Mastery would also be incorporated because nurses need intrinsic motivation to do what they’re doing, “Mastery is the desire to get better and better at something that matters” (Pink 98). As a nurse I would want to succeed every day at my job to do better and better with my patients and grow my knowledge. Purpose is also really important because most reasons on why people become nurses is because they have compassion for others and don’t do it for the money, pink sates that purpose is doing something meaningful and contributing to the
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an important look at the methods humans use in our interaction with our shared environments and how we relate differently to shared experiences (Cohen, D., Cohen M., Cross, H., 1981). Differences in how individuals relate to and understand our surroundings are displayed and sorted using scales for several fields. Extroversion and introversion are determined and assigned to this indicator using either E or I. A clear definition between sensing and intuition is also defined by the assignment of S or N. Also, thinking and feeling are compared and determined adding the letters of either T or F to the result. The last letter in ones conformed profile will include either J or P for judging compared to perception.
Nurses are a vital part of the health care system and the leaders that manage their performance can affect their productivity, trust, and even acceptance of change. The purpose of this paper is to discuss my style of leadership based on a leadership style survey. I will also describe what leadership and management theories align with my leadership style. After presenting my leadership style, I will discuss the work environment that this style would be successful in. I will conclude with three key behaviors that will demonstrate the skills of a successful leader.
Key attributes that help in identifying qualities and characteristics of a professional nurse are knowledge, spirit of inquiry, accountability, autonomy, advocacy, collaboration and ethical values. Advocacy is the ability to comprehend the client’s perspective, educating them on the key areas surrounding their treatment and being knowledgeable of policies that will impact delivery of quality healthcare. Innovation requires fostering a culture that enhances client/family understanding of different outcomes, and showing initiative in new actionable ideas that will better treatment provided. Collaboration requires nurses to work hand in hand with other healthcare professionals in ensuring quality service are provided to a patient (Laws & Rules,
It is recognized that in the training on NL’s the preparation for leadership is a critical element, in addition to being an important priority for nursing in general. The American Nurses Association(ANA) visualizes the complexity of the nurse 's managerial role given that they are currently being asked to execute leadership to build quality work environments, implement new models of care, and contribute to the development of a workforce which encourages healthy nursing and well-being. Marquis and Huston (2014) discuss how the mark of a good nursing leader is in the ability to inspire and motivate others to action; furthermore, no one leadership style is ideal and may vary according to the situation. The purpose of this paper is to match and explain the nursing leadership theory that is most applicable to solving communication issues, and to explain how legislation and health care policy can impact communication issues in the nursing. Nursing Leadership Theory Nursing leadership is complex and multifaceted and has been cited as a main reason nurses leave their current position (Blake, Leach, Robbins, Pike, & Needleman, 2013). Blake et al.
They were more likely to share articles and contribute to policy writing than their ADN counterparts. The third difference is while the respondents stated that there was no difference in professionalism between the two groups, they did state that nurses who returned to school took their profession “seriously”. (Leroy, Laplante, Patterson, & deRuyter, 2014) However, the most common pattern that arose from their study was “individual characteristics determining success” (Leroy, Laplante, Patterson, & deRuyter, 2014). That is referring to a subjective perspective on personality or behavior of the individual.
I agree with almost every description of my personality prescribed to me. The personality prescribed to me was ENTJ. The main description of a ENTJ is that they are commandant. I do enjoy taking a leadership role but I do not seek the position.
However, there are certain strategies that can overcome these barriers. For instance, the nurse’s resistance to change and poor communication of objectives is overcome by constant communication of the benefits of this leadership style not just through word, but also through actions until they understand its
According to my preceptor last semester I demonstrates a sound understanding of self-care, self-reflection and work life balance. I also have an “understanding of the components of the nurse patient relationship, by maintaining an open and professional relationship with the patients.” I am also “demonstrated self-direction and initiative” (B. Mahy, personal communication, DATE). Rena Hania, my current preceptor indicates that my strengths include “Maturity, professionalism and desire for autonomy. Asks appropriate questions, and have a gift for connecting with my patients” (R. Hania, personal communication,
The management style of this particular nurse leader was largely democratic. He valued the input of every member of his team, and collaborated with others to find solutions to clinical problems. Throughout the day, we attended numerous meetings and conference calls, addressing the concerns of each department throughout the hospital. The CNO, expressed to me how much he valued the opinions of nurses at the bedside, which I thought was fantastic. His positive qualities were that he was a great listener, honest, focused, and empowered his employees.
Jung’s (1923) idea about extroversion-introversion was the starting point for more scientific investigation in the personality traits domain in the early twentieth century. Jung proposed the “duality” in human personality. He distinguished two schools of thought in philosophy, namely idealists and realists and claimed that idealist consider the subject of perception as a base for knowledge while realists believe that the object of perception is the base of knowledge. Having studied the background of these schools of thought, Jung claimed that a comprise exists between philosophy and psychology in which realists are more extroverts while idealists are more introverts. He further differentiated these two distinctions by characteristics that identify
Personality is superficial, whether a person outgoing or more reserved, it doesn’t involve their values. Character however, does. Covey places an emphasis on character as the basis for a quality life (Covey, 1989). The Seven Habits are as follows: be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek first to understand and then be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw. In nursing, these habits may be used throughout the entire profession, whether it incorporated into introductory and new graduate roles, or the management setting (Covey,
