Physical activity, which can take many forms, plays a major role in shaping someone’s personality. During my childhood years, I participated in multiple sports. I was decent at some, but at others, I did not have the most glorious experiences. Although I had sad memories with some of these sports, those that I stuck with, such as basketball and soccer, molded me into a fun and energetic competitor and taught me lessons I could not learn in a traditional classroom setting—discipline, teamwork, communication. Through sports, I developed the mindset of a winner, which I hope will stick with me for life. As a child, my mother signed me up for a variety of sports at the YMCA: tee-ball, soccer, track and field, and basketball. My tee-ball career, although it was legendary, was cut short, but not because of an injury. When I say legendary, I do not mean averaging ten runs a game or anything amazing like that. I batted like no other, hitting the tee, instead of the ball, with the force of an army tank, and although my stat line for “tee-hits” was off the charts, this tragic tendency ended my career as a potential baseball player. I might have just quit sports altogether, but luckily, I still had opportunities as a soccer and basketball player. I am unsure of my career plans but am considering certain professions in the health field, including physician or physician assistant, because I find joy in directly helping others and human health intrigues me. I am also considering going into computer science because with today’s technological innovations, computers are so useful that they can be applied to any field, including health or sport management. Either career field will likely require teamwork and communication experience, skills I have acquired through
