Time can be an era meaning century or year in which the setting takes place. Place is a location where a story can take place. Social environment is the expectations of others having to live up to others needs or satisfactions. Why is the setting of stories important? The setting helps readers understand why the character acts a certain way and how the surroundings around them can cause much difficulty for them. The aspects of time can influence the personality of a character, location quite often influences behavior, and social expectations contribute to why the character experiences conflict. A prime example of place is “Killings” Andre Dubus. “Ruth sees him. She sees him too much. She was a Sunnyhurst today getting cigarettes and aspirin, there he was. She can’t even go out for cigarettes and aspirin” (Dubus 111). “It’s kidding her” (Dubus 111). Since Matt and wife Ruth live in a small town along with Richard, there is a huge possibility of seeing Richard in every corner they turn. “ He walks the Goddamn streets” (Dubus 111). Richard gets looks from the whole community since he’s been out of jail. He’s been walking around, living a free and normal life since he’s gotten out, like nothing has happened. Due to the fact that Matt does not live in a big town, where there is numerous other stores and people; therefore, Matt would not have the influence or motivation for killing Richard. They would not see each other frequently or pass by one another at a store feeling grief and sadness starring at the man who killed their son. Since the location of the setting was a small town, it gave Matt more opportunity to study Richards’s habits and capture him. If they were to live in a big town, Matt would not have the opportunity to learn Richards
