The research methods employed to explore teacher’s perception on the influence of socio-economic status on the phonological awareness of students is examined in this chapter. This chapter begins with an overview of the research design including the research aim, research philosophy and time horizon of the research. Then the specific research methods employed for participant recruitment, instrument development, data collection and data analysis are discussed. This chapter will justify the use of quantitative surveys over qualitative or mixed methods. It will discuss the snowballing method used in this research for data collection and Last, it will discuss the ethical considerations and any issues that occurred throughout the research. 3.2 Overview …show more content…
Since the primary aim of this research is to establish the association between socioeconomic status and phonological awareness from teachers’ perspective a quantitative research methodology is considered suitable for this research. An examination of several studies that have examined teachers’ perception have utilised quantitative research methodologies (Brady et al., 2009; Wolff et al., 2016), qualitative research methodologies (Crume, 2013) and mixed methods research methods (O'Leary, Cockburn, Powell and Diamond, 2010). One major weakness identified in qualitative research methodologies was the large number of participants dropping out of the interviews and difficulty in gathering in depth data due to reluctance of the teachers to share more information during interviews (Crume, 2013). In the qualitative study by Crume, (2013), nearly 40% of the teachers dropped out in the follow up …show more content…
This self-administered questionnaire (Appendix B) was designed for the study through the use of the site esurveycreator.com. Since a self-administered questionnaire was designed for the survey an information sheet was provided as the first sheet of the survey to ensure that the respondents understand about the purpose of the survey, the confidentiality and anonymity of respondents and the freedom to participate or withdraw from the survey. As an additional step to increase the anonymity and encourage honest opinions from the respondents the survey was conducted through an online media. The study conducted by Gnambs and Kaspar (2015) revealed that computerised survey motivates respondents to provide answers to even sensitive
As a baseline, teachers should be trained to acknowledge the resources and backgrounds all children so that they may be able to recognize the strengths of non-native English speakers. A wholistic evaluation of minority groups is necessary for their successful integration in to the education system, if traditional practices are to continue in society. Many children in poorer areas are forced to “code-switch” between their home dialect and the dialect spoken in school. Teaching one “correct” way to speak and write can have major implications for a young person’s confidence and
1. Goal The primary purpose of this lab was to get familiar with RLES and establish a base infrastructure. This infrastructure includes a router/firewall and Linux server for network monitoring and documentation. Network monitoring is crucial in any infrastructure, no matter how small or how large.
Unit 2 – P3 and D1 Intro: Throughout this assignment, I will be discussing about how to manage and maintain an operating system for e.g. removing files that may contain viruses and cleaning files that are unnecessary in the operating system. I will also be talking about the benefits and drawbacks of each software utilities and I will be explaining and defining what each of the definitions actually mean. There are four essential categories that I will be focusing on and this will be explained later on. Security
Unit 12- D1: Review a recent advance in support system technology In this document I will be reviewing recent advances in support systems technology. For this I have chosen 3 developments. In the modern world, IT is something we all use for a range of different tasks from entertainment to work. As technology advances, the chance of encountering an error increases as we use more technological advances.
Moreover, children’s phonological awareness skills can be strengthened and used as a tool to mediate the differences between their language system and SAE. For example, Connor and Craig (2006) evaluated the language
This article was sent to me by my professor, Dr. Conradi, and is also available using EBSCOhost. This article was reader friendly and introduces a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who is using multiple inclusion models in the elementary school to work with classroom teachers to provide in-class services to her speech-language students. The article shows how flexible and willing the SLP is to come in the classroom and provided services to her students. Then the flipside is presented as the SLP is reflecting on her practices and realizes that perhaps this is not the best way to provide instruction to her students. In one situation she is a co-teacher and in the other situation she is more of a teacher’s aide.
Kalina is a 3rd grade student with Other Health Impairment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and speech impairment. She is an outstanding student when it comes to reading fluency, spelling vocabulary and mathematics, but due to her ADHD it affects her ability to remain focused which her ability of reading comprehension. In addition, Kalina does not have a learning disability, but does use a graphic organizer to help her remain focused on the reading material. Kalina participates in small group reading instruction for comprehension, but individualize instruction for math and vocabulary lessons. Kalina is required to have extra time to do a test and/or assignments as she is unable to stay focused due to her ADHD.
A cross-sectional qualitative study using purposive sampling to select children of differing ages was conducted. One researcher with a history in qualitative studies interviewed the 32 children participating in the study. The researcher held practice interviews with a colleague with experience interviewing children. When possible children were interviewed in their home, although 3 of the children were interviewed in a hospital setting. Interviews lasted between 17 and 90 minutes.
Some educators confuse phonemic awareness with phonics, auditory discrimination or phonetics. On page 131 in figure 1 in the article
This data set was compiled through using many different surveying methods, and yielded over 9,000 respondents. In order to answer the question, the researcher organized the data from the database through different steps.
Cut-off date 27 February. Part1: Essay. ‘Evaluate the contribution of a qualitative approach to research on friendship’. Part2: DE100 project report – Method.
An advantage of conducting a Survey is that it allows the researcher to collect a large amount of data over a short period of time. They can also be created and administered quickly and easily. A disadvantage of a Survey is that often times the answer choice on a survey may not reflect the participants true opinion. Case Study is a research method in which is single person is directly observed. This study is an open ended type of data collection.
In addition, interventions to improve phonological awareness abilities lead to significantly improved reading abilities. As Sam & Rojian (2013) added, the relationship between phonological awareness and reading abilities changes over time. All levels of phonemic awareness ability (syllable, onset-rhyme, and phoneme) contribute to reading abilities through early grades. The relationship between phonological awareness and literacy is often explained in terms of its role in decoding and encoding.
First one is that activities should be appropriate children`s age level. Second one is that instruction should be purposeful and third one is that activities and materials should be integrated with other components of a balanced literacy programs. A teacher can teach identifying words, categorizing words, substituting sounds, blending sounds, and segmenting sounds by doing age appropriate activities with children. Teachers assess children by using screening test to determine the level of their knowledge about phonemic awareness and they use instruction assessment cycle are planning, monitoring, evaluation, and reflection. Phonemic awareness is important to learn how to read and it is prerequisite.
