Ratio Reflection

The first main idea is ratios. Ratios is a comparison of two things. You can write it like a number to another number or with the colon symbol between them. For example, if I had a bag of 20 red and blue marbles and 5 of them were blue my ratio of marbles would 5 to 20 or 5:20 because you use the total amount and the number of the part you wish to find. As a future teacher, I think it is important for students to learn this concept at a young age because they are going to be exposed to it all their lives from the toy they have to the amount of boys to girls in their classes at school. As a future teacher, I think this idea is important because everything relates back to ratios we use ratios to get a general idea of population growth to the amount of each spice you put into your chili for dinner that night. The second main idea is rates. A rate is a ratio that measures the difference between two quantities. For example, I get 32 miles to the gallon in my car, this is a rate because it is measuring the amount of miles I can drive my car on a tank of gas. Scientific notation is the writing of a mantra or number with its characteristic the amount of numbers it is multiplied by ten. If the charatoritic is positive the zeros go behind the number and if the characteristic is negative the zeros go in front of the number depending on the number of place values the number has and the number of the characteristic. For example 9.12 x 10 ^9 = 9,120,000,000, but if it were negative it would look like this 9.12 x 10 ^-9 = 0.00000000912. As a future teacher, I think it is important for students to learn this concept at a young age because it lets them have exposure to the concept before they reach their higher level math classes so they are not overwhelmed.
