CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF RESEARCH
Malaysia is committed to develop an educational system for all students where equity and excellence is the ultimate goal of the process (Noriah, Rosadah, & Rahayah, 2009). Based on this ultimate goal of our nation, we are facing with a big obstacle on how to ensure that our young generation, especially the primary schools’ students are coherent to this mission. Without even realizing, our students nowadays are having low-level of reading literacy which is concluded by International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), 2001 as cited from Geske and Ozola, 2008.
Reading is an art of interpreting printed and written words, the effective process of conscious learning that influences the extent and accuracy of information, attitudes, morals, beliefs, judgment and action of readers stated by Devarajan and Gray (1989) in Panigrahi and Panda, 1996. Based on this quotation, reading is the most effective way to gain knowledge and to learn basic etiquette such as attitudes, morals and manners. Yet, the society still takes this skill for granted and it is

First, this research benefits students as the students can identify their reading ability and aware of the importance of having high-literacy in reading. They also can improve their reading by manipulating the factors that affecting one’s reading ability. Second, the teachers also can identify the reasons of the existence of variety reading ability. They also can improve their teaching strategies in class in order to fill in the loopholes that cause low-level in reading ability. Third, the research also important to help the Ministry of Education to be aware with the reading ability among primary schools and using the findings to plan appropriate module in order to enhance reading ability among primary school
The article “Why Don’t Teens Read For Pleasure Like They Use To?” by Jennifer Ludden, writes about teens not reading as much and why aren’t they reading. Ludden uses logos and people to show the drop-off reading among teens. The author utilize people and data to support the drop-off in reading amidst teens.
Some argue that the practice is only beneficial if it contains “super stable structures” or set rules. The argument is that practicing only benefits categories such as sports and music as the rules never change. I believe that any specific skill that a person wants to improve upon or master can be and has to be practiced, no matter what category of skill it may fall in. As long as an action is repeated consistently, it will become a habit. Another argument is that a person’s opportunities and chances are what defines a person’s success not their work ethic.
Literacy enriches our lives in an outstanding manner. From a young age, we are eager to sit by our parent’s side and listen to bedtime stories. As our love for reading and writing grows, our wealth and thirst for knowledge does as well. The ability to entertain and enlighten our world through literacy is exponential.
Argumentative Essay What if the phrase “practice makes perfect” wasn’t actually true? Malcolm Gladwell claims that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to perfect a skill, however, some people are starting to believe that may not be the case. “Your Genes Don’t Fit. Why 10,000 Hours of Practice, Won’t Make You an Expert”, argues that mastering a skill requires innate abilities along with practice.
Since I was young, I have been passionate about lending a hand, to a person I felt needed support and this passion helped shape what my future may hold. An event happened that has been instrumental in developing my character and guiding my choices ever since. It was a late summer night and it was almost midnight when my soccer game ended, After the game, I ran into the washroom because I was dying to ease myself. I took an excessive time and missed my ride home; they must have thought I had another ride home. My situation made me become bewildered at what to do next then, I thought to myself on giving my mother a call.
Everyone has things that they are really good at. It's time people realize that everyone doesn't describe people who are supposedly
Today’s youth spend countless hours on the internet for various reasons. Whether it is for research purposes, indulging in social media, watching videos, or playing games, reading is involved in some shape or form. Regardless of the content, reading online gives children certain abilities, such as expanding their vocabulary, adapting to different wordings and writing styles, identifying errors, understanding the material, and identifying the importance of details/imagery in their writing, that they may or may not be getting from books. In the article Literacy Debate: R U Really Reading?
The quote above from “Improving Adolescent Literacy: Content Area Strategies at Work” by Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, squares with my thinking because I believe giving reading assignments to students must be purposeful. In my grade years, I would always get irritated with my teachers for assigning reading without purpose. I believe teachers should give worksheets to the students when they assign reading. Assigning worksheets that go along with the text helps the students read more in depth. It also shows the students what they should be focusing on which helps the students understand the material.
When most people tend to think of being literate they think of being able to read and write. Until last week I thought the exact thing. I learned that being literate was not is not just reading and writing. It is a plethora of things that you can be literate in. My literacy is a thing that I have been doing for a long time.
actually affects our brains and the way we use them. Many people would argue that technology has more cons than pros, however it’s quite the opposite. We use technology in our everyday lives and it helps us to gain more knowledge than we’ve ever been able to before. The technology we have today is one of the greatest advantages we could have. Andrea Lunsford, who wrote “Our Semi-Literate Youth?
My relationship with literacy has been a journey all on its own. From learning how to sound out letters and words, to reading my first sentence , I have developed quite a valuable foundation and platform, that will eventually guide me to success. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a love that just continues to blossom. A love that will never fail, nor will I fail it. This love that I speak of is my passion for reading, writing and literacy as a whole.
For me, literacy has always been a problem to this day I am still learning how to speak, and write using proper literacy. Literacy is not just reading and writing, anyone can do that but the ability to understand such things, to comprehend them that is, true literacy. My development for literacy has always been a struggle as I have spoken about before. I had a speak impediment when I was younger which used me to go into different classes which took me away from formal English classes.
My experience as a reader isn 't as extraordinary as many, but I love to read. I had some great teachers throughout my education that taught me to enjoy reading challenge oneself and not be intimidated by it. Through college and today I do not have much time to read, other than school books speech, education ,and reading. Those are the sweet books I know read.
The reader acquires a variety of vocabulary thus increases the quality of writing and reading for low level readers. Secondly, it makes the reader be able to interpret text by using word attack skills and text attack skills which improves the skill of reading. Lastly, it makes the reader to understand or comprehend difficult text in a book or reading material. Drawbacks or limitations of intensive reading are firstly, most time is spent on reading a small amount of text which is time consuming. Secondly, Reading new material mostly containing complex vocabulary and grammar is a long and slow process in order for the reader to understand the text in the reading material.
Everyone knows that reading is important, but have you ever asked yourself why is that so? Reading is one of the most beneficial and practical activities that a human being can do. Unfortunately it is a disappointment that people these days read less. As we know, books were the main source of entertainment centuries ago, but with the widespread of technological advances such as the cinema, television, internet, among others, many people left their books on the bookshelf. The purpose of this speech is to present the benefits and the importance of reading.
