1. Introduction If one wants to improve a skill or competence motivation is an important factor that contributes to successfully achieving this goal. Especially, when it comes to learning in the classroom motivation is key. Hence, it is neccessary that teachers know what it takes to foster the students’ motivation. In this case the effects of reading motivation will be discussed. The importance of reading should not be underestimated mostly “[b]ecause learning depends so strongly on text materials [that] reading competence appears to be a highly important precondition of academic achievement” (Schiefele et al. (2012: 428). Therefore, it is important to evoke the students’ reading motivation to improve their reading competence, as they work hand-in-hand. Improving competence without motivation is hardly possible. Thus, many different aspects need to be considered to improve reading motivation in the English Foreign Language Classroom (EFLC). In the flowing the different factors that influence a student’s reading behavior, such as reading motivation and competence will be described. Furthermore, an example of a reading lesson will be given, in which the various aspects of how to increase reading motivation and competence will be considered to plan a lesson that is beneficial for the students’ language-learning process.
