School Subjects and Social Studies
In the school system of American Samoa, the students will be facing all school subjects such as English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Samoan Studies, etc.… as they start off from Kindergarten through level eight. Many school subjects consist of knowledge and skills, but social studies emphasize attitudes and values. With that being said, social study is different from all school subjects, but they have the same thing in common. Although teachers are aware that (1) school subject comprise knowledge, (2) social studies emphasizes attitudes and values, (3) the difference between both, and (4) the importance of both in the school system.
Why School Subjects comprise knowledge and Skills? According to Ministry of Education (2016), “Knowledge skills focus on developing your child’s thinking and communication skills. Knowledge skills are taught through variety of subjects and often through a project work approach.” This enables students to prepare for the better future, and to demonstrate everything that they learned from school subjects into their workforce. Both knowledge and skills are very powerful tools, which can guide people to their dreams or to achieve something in this life. Nothing is possible without using knowledge or skills that students acquired from their school life. For example, a Samoan child who never goes to school was given a chance to meet a horse and was told to ride it. This Samoan child has no sense of knowledge of
