CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
Higher Education is one of the main factors that obligates individual to achieve their goals and to face different life challenges. College life can be challenging and difficult for a new student, thus requiring a higher degree of student initiative, determination, and self-monitoring.
Many researchers tried to indentify factors to student success, by assessing the relations among many psychological and academic variables. Few studies have used different methods to propose and test models that can be used to understand the relations among factors that influence student academic success. (Momanyi, Ogoma, Misigo 2010; Peterson, Milstein, Chen, and Nakazawa 2011; Schunk 1991)
According to Mbathia

The study resulted that people may perform poorly in a task not necessarily because they lack the capability to succeed, but because they lack belief in their capabilities. Bandura (1997) defined efficacy as an individual’s belief that he or she can successfully execute the behaviours required by a particular situation
Indeed, Self-Efficacy also is one of the factors that influence your goals and success (failure) in life. Once, self-efficacy become lower than the ability of an individual, an individual never haves challenges and improvement.
Individuals with a high level of self-efficacy attempt tasks and keep up trying even though tasks might be difficult and think then that it is hard for them to accomplished it, while individuals with a low level of self-efficacy most of the time the kind of individual that don’t put a heart on his doing and easy to give up. As Bandura (1986), explains an individual’s beliefs about his abilities make up his sense of self-efficacy. Based on Bandura (1977), an individual that believes that they have high level of self-efficacy, the more he is willing to do the job done, which in itself makes it possible for the individual to be fully

It includes the research design, participants, instruments, and the statistical treatment of data.
In this study, the researcher used Regression Analysis; to see whether among self-efficacy and resilience really predicts academic performance. Regression Analysis is a statistical technique that allows one to predict scores on one variable on the basis of the scores of several other variables (Brace, 2007). This kind of research design basically it is used when a certain variable is studied in relationship to other factors expressed as predictor variables. But, regression analysis cannot be use when you are having variables that are usually similar to each other. Regression Analysis focuses on the part of the cause and effect of variables. Regression analysis is used by the researchers to know whether among the predicting variables (self-efficacy and resilience) predicts the criterion variable (academic performance). The predictor variables are also referred to as independent variables and the criterion variable is the dependent variable.
Self-efficacy is best explained by Bandura (1995) who says that it "refers to beliefs in one's capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to manage prospective situations". More simply, self-efficacy is what an individual believes he or she can accomplish using his or her skills under certain circumstances (Snyder & Lopez, 2007). Self-efficacy has been thought to be a task-specific version of self-esteem. The basic principle behind Self-Efficacy Theory is that individuals are more likely to engage in activities for which they have high self-efficacy and less likely to engage in those they do not (Van der Bijl & Shortridge-Baggett, 2002). I think that this research by Snyder & lopez is particularly relevant to Simons case as.
When students set out for higher education and prepare for their future they usually have an end goal in mind. When most students come to college, they typically have an idea of what degree to pursue or what they are interested in studying. In Sanford J. Ungar’s article “The New Liberal Arts” he quoted that “The responsibility of higher education today is to prepare people for jobs that do not yet exist” (657). However, whatever job a student ends up in is significantly helped through higher education. With this in mind, college students need to have the skills needed to adapt to any situation and perform in many different ways.
College is an immensely impactful part of someone’s life since it is the beginning of a frightening yet amazingly successful journey. College is the stepping stone or the leap of faith someone must take to undergo the transition to adulthood. College opens the gates to the real word. We are facing a time where the United States economy is under one trillion dollars in debt due to college expenses which cause struggling students to wonder and ask themselves, “Is College even worth it?” Attaining a higher education is vitally important; it just matters on making the right decision for it to be worthwhile.
Introduction ‘Adrian’, a 47-year-old British male, who has recently joined his local gym has been attending 2-3 times a week for three weeks. However, he is starting to lose motivation to exercise as he “does not enjoy it”. Adrian perceives himself as “physically unfit” compared to other members, but his wife insists he attends. He occasionally visits with his colleague ‘Dave’ who is argumentative, restricts his activity choice and forces him to do exercises he does not enjoy. Thus, Adrian feels inefficacious in his ability to increase his cardiorespiratory fitness.
For many people, higher education is needed as they pursue their desired career paths. However, the same seven deadly sins of lust, gluttony, envy, greed, anger, sloth, and pride that keep one unhappy and unmotivated in everyday life, even if one does not realize these are the source of their unhappiness, can also be applied even more specifically to students. Most will struggle with at least one of these areas, if not all of them, in their academic journey. Being aware of the common potential downfalls, though, can better set up a student opportunities to overcome them. This, in turn, will help them in overcoming obstacles in their life after school as well.
Self efficacy can be defined as belief in one's own abilities to accomplish a goal. This is important
According to Clarke University Counseling and Career Services, the biggest adjustment for college students is the increase of personal responsibility. New college students find themselves with a tremendous amount of freedom with a lot less external structure. There are no set study times, no required meal times, no one to tell them when to sleep or get them up, an increase in their academic workload, a greater need to multi-task and balance and a myriad of new social opportunities and challenges. Based on the statement, it is a part of a skill of students.
They can be visualized as a triangle with free movement between the 3 sides. As our textbook says, an individual’s confidence that he or she can control his or her success is an example of a person factor: strategies are an example of a cognitive factor. Self-efficacy is an important part of Bandura’s theory. Self-efficacy, according to Bandura, is believing that you can accomplish a certain task or succeed in a certain situation. Within self-efficacy, a person may avoid learning a certain task because they do not feel they can accomplish it.
INTRODUCTION Most of the people consider that being a student is the most enjoyable and stress free part of our life. This is the stage where we are exploring different things in our environment. Being influenced by someone in good or in bad things. This is the stage wherein we have a lot of ambition or goals, that push our limits in order to achieve it in the future.
1.2.1.2 Bandura’s social cognitive theory (1997) While one strand of research grounded in Rotter’s Social Learning Theory developed, a second strand emerged, growing out of Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and his construct of Self-Efficacy, as initially described in his 1977 article, ‘‘Self-Efficacy: Toward a unifying theory of behavioral change’’. Bandura (1997) defined perceived Self-Efficacy as ‘‘beliefs in one’s capabilities
Theory: Criminal justice 2 represents reasonable descriptions of reality. This theory approach tries to categorize and classify events in order to recognize the reasons of events, to forecast the way of future events and to know how and why these events take place. It speaks to a sensible and educated figure concerning why things are as they seem and to clarify their underlying nature and importance. The era of hypothetical clarifications is the thing that recognizes a theory of simply an accumulation of war stories and precisely documented encyclopedic accounts. Theory inquires: What is the purpose of the majority of this?
Students face various challenges throughout their college career. Thus, the problems that students have can range from balance, new lifestyle, to financial problems. Therefore, finding a balance between being a student, possibly working, and keeping up with their social life is a necessity. Similarly, others are away from home for the first time thus, they have a new responsibility with being on their own and findings ways to deal with homesickness. Likewise, being exposed to new financial situations is yet another challenge college students will need to learn how to cope with.
Self-efficacy is a central concept in Bandura’s social cognitive theory, where required to produce given attainments (Bandura, 1997). There is a positive relationship that exists between work self-efficacy and performance in an organizational setting according to Raelin (2011). He and his colleagues found that the self-efficacy of university students was improved. Self-efficacy is used by universities and companies to measure an individual’s capacity to cope with learning and performing. There is a great importance in one’s self-efficacy that it should not be underestimated because it can influence the courses of actions a person choose to pursue and how much effort will they give to their
The variables are reflected with different representation. In the first three variables (ability, motivation, and age) reflect characteristics of the student. The fourth and fifth variables reflect instruction (quantity and quality), and the final four variables (classroom climate, home environment, peer group, and exposure to media) represent aspects of the psychological environment. He explained that these variables has a certain effects that might cause problems with the academic performance of students if it will not be properly guided. Giving importance with a certain variable can mean a big impact with the student’s academic performance.
Their study took into account a variety of factors that can diminish a student’s academic performance. An undergraduate study done by Neumann et
