Self-management is what happens when you act. It depends on your self-awareness and is the second component of personal competence. Self-management is your ability to use your awareness of your emotions to stay flexible and direct your behavior to positive outcomes. This means managing your emotional reactions to situation and people.
Self-management is more than resisting explosive or problematic behavior. The bigger challenge that leaders face is managing their tendencies over time and applying their self-management skills in various situations. The behavior you demonstrate in particular under the influence of strong emotions. Prime the emotional state of your people. Expressing positive emotions in form of energy, enthusiasm and a belief in the future motivates and inspire your people. Expressing negative emotions has the opposite effect. Getting irritable or being down other people with you. When you get jumpy and overreact to things people say and do, your behavior has a negative impact on all who witness it. Positive emotions need managing too, especially in business where leaders have a tendency to think they walk on water when things are going well. Positive emotions can cloud your thinking and lead you to make poor choice just as easily as negative ones.
4. Sidestep a hijacking
When you don’t stop to think about your feelings, you set yourself up to be a frequent victim of emotional hijacking. Whether you are aware of them or not, your emotions will control you, and you will move through your day reacting to your feelings with little choice in what you say and do. Develop the ability to size yourself up quickly and grab the rein before your emotions hijack your behavior.
5. Make Your Goals Public
Walking your talk is hard, especially when life is always throwing you curveballs. Sometimes the biggest letdowns are private ones. When you fail to reach goal or do what we set out to do. There is no more powerful motivator for reaching your goals than making the public. If you clearly tell other people what you are setting out to accomplish, their awareness of your progress creates an incredible sense of accountability. If it is unobtainable, make it obtainable. If your goals are too difficult to reach, that's okay, just make them more manageable. If everything has been tried in order to achieve a certain goal but still no cigar, just devalue whatever it is and forget about it. In a nutshell, this is what Stanford professor Bernard Roth preaches in the first chapter of his book The Achievement Habit. In order to persuade his audience, Roth utilizes rhetorical appeals such as: logos, ethos, a and pathos, but does so rather ineffectually .
Positive emotions like happiness, contentment, and joy help us develop stability and optimism, deepen social connections, and encourage a sense of purpose and meaning in life. They can give us the motivation and energy to achieve our goals, pursue our passions, and help us navigate difficult situations more quickly and confidently. Negative emotions like anger, sadness, and fear are vital. They can help us identify areas of our lives that need attention or change and motivate us to take action. Studies have shown that individuals who can acknowledge and process negative emotions in healthy and constructive ways experience greater psychological well-being and resilience.

My submission for this content area are the field notes from lesson 7 in SPE 520, which demonstrates my understanding of self-management strategies. Self- management is comprised of 4 applications: Living more efficient daily lives, breaking bad habits and gaining good ones, the accomplishment of difficult tasks, and achieving goals (Cooper, Heron, and Heward, 2007). Self-management is the personal application of a plan and the implementation of a contingency as part of a behavior change program.
Emotions are what propel you forward to reach your goal, but what also stop you from breaking your limits. They are what weigh into our decisions and help lead us to the choices we forever live with. Not only can they determine what we do, but also when and how we do it. At times they are stronger than others, pulling us forward or throwing us back as if we have absolutely no control. Just like in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the entire lives of two teenagers led by the emotions that they couldn’t ignore.
Within our lives, we go through many phases of emotion. These emotions can be happy, sad, good, bad, lovely, terrible, etc. However, the emotions we face throughout our life make us who we are today. They shape our character and help us through difficult times. Emotions are a very beautiful thing, however, they also can be destructive.
Individuals often respond to stressful situations based on how their leader handles the situation under stress. Leaders create and maintain a positive working environment. Studies have shown that leaders who consistently out perform their peers not only have the technical skills required, but more importantly, have mastered most of the aspects of EI. Leaders who regulate themselves effectively do not verbally attack others, make rushed or emotional decisions, stereotype people or compromise their values. Emotions are a huge influence when it comes to making choices in your life. When you act upon those emotions took quickly it will lead to very consequential conclusions. Failing to consider the consequences of one's action can lead to disaster. Not only that but running away and avoiding your problems because of your emotions also lead to these detrimental outcomes. As well, depressing thoughts can also lead to very undesirable results.
"No matter the situation, never let your emotions overpower your intelligence." (Pinterest) Emotions are always with people. The way people react to certain things is all based on emotions. These emotions can often lead to violent or harmful actions.
A leader will be able to make better decisions and connect with authentic self by getting in touch with their inner voice. This is a description of self-awareness. Self-awareness is all about drawing attention to internal psychological signals monitored by the insula and amygdala as somatic makers messages. Somatic makers tend to guide one’s attention into making a better decision based on a right or wrong feeling. Therefore, self awareness is combining one’s authentic self experience across time with sensory impressions.
When a person responds to conflict in a positive way, not only will it set an example for others, but will also share that positive mood with others and can help people resolve a conflict quicker. By resolving conflict with a positive or happy attitude will also help someone keep a good demeanor after the conflict is settled. Another way positive emotions can spread is through team sports. One example of this is, “Similar results have been found in team sports. When a team is upbeat, positive, and in an overall good mood, this spirit is transferred to individual players.
Self –awareness requires us to be aware of our feeling at the moment and be as the guide towards the decision been made. Self -awareness gives sense of self confident and accurate evaluation of a person own abilities. On the other hand, self-regulation is how a person manage their emotion so that it assist instead of interfering with the task in hand. Self-motivation is the ability of a person to understand their own emotion into motivating them toward involving themselves in the work they are working on without giving up. Empathy is the capability of a person to understand others emotion in particular situation and react appropriately.
Goal shifting This is the easiest step that you can move forward with, rather than dreading on the failure. What does goal shifting exactly mean? It means that, rather than aiming for an imaginary target, set for something that is feasible. Do not aim for something that is a materialistic gain at the beginning of the venture.

As Martin Luther said, “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run walk, if you can’t walk crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” 6) Hold yourself accountable Develop a checklist of what you need to do on a daily basis to achieve your goals. Set some time at the end of every day to evaluate your performance and progress in respect to your daily action points. It is the small things that we do every day that make or break us.
