Today we live in a world which is one small global village, where information flows even faster than the speed of lightning. Everything is available at your fingertips at the touch of a button. It is a world which is changing every second. A Billion Dollars of wealth is created in a year’s time while others took more than a century. This fast paced, ever-changing world is throwing immense challenges and opportunities for today’s leader. He continuously has to adapt to this ever changing, fast paced environment. An environment which is as complex as it is challenging. And if you are like the most successful leaders and you have moved up the ladder, you are pretty much on your own. You no longer have a mentor or guide, which gives consideration to your regular actions. You will realize your mistakes when it’s too late to fix them. Time for correcting action would have already passed. However good a leader you are, you are not perfect; nobody is. You are bound to go wrong. The world around you will quietly change; you may not realize it. This is one of the reasons that self evaluation and assessment has become extremely important for today’s Leader. While I remain aware of others emotions I have a tough time keeping my emotions in check and tend to react before taking the time to reflect on the
John Adams said it perfectly when said what it means to be leader “ If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” In one sentence he was able to sum up the true meaning of leadership as well as mentorship which go hand in hand. Once you have achieved greatness in life it 's important to take what you have learned and impart it on the next generation. I n my opinion, the keys to effective leadership are multifaceted. Lately it seems that there is a revolving door of reactive ephemeral leaders with different ideas in constant flux; as they are more concentrated in moving onward and upward, then providing aspirations necessary to motivate others. When placed in a situation that was not covered in intuitional learning they simply seize up and rely on subordinates to get them through it. Conversely a proactive Leaderly learner takes the reigns and draws upon experience to direct others with clarity and purpose; in order to address the particular white water
Imagine this: You and your classmates are asked to lift ‘x’ amount of weight, ‘x’ amount of times, or for ‘x’ period of time. During these lifts, you will be analyzed and assessed based off performance. The assessment will begin during or after instructions are given and will continue throughout the semester. Steady build of progress is expected and select milestones must be obtained in order to perform well in the class. Throughout, “Real Leadership: What It Takes” by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, he talks about what it takes to be a leader. He lists 10 attributions of leaders. While reading his list, I realized that I have achieved some, but others I have neglected. Those that I have neglected will need more practice because it is imperative, as a leader, to be a good role model for all of the people that you are assisting. One of the leadership qualities that I have achieved is the ability to identify mistakes.
Another thing about leadership is its an art. People can’t just become a leader, it’s inside of them just waiting for an opportunity to reveal itself. “Educators, health professionals, and parents all agree that as society grows more complex, young people are in greater need than ever for grounding in the basic values that determine character”(Hirschmann 12). Self assessment is a concept familiar to me however one that I am not very comfortable with for it further clarifies my realization that I have so much to learn in every aspect of my life. It does keep me grounded and able to learn from anything and everything on a daily basis. I work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and as a Neonatologist I am the team leader in a multitude of situations which require quick, precise and accurate decision making skills on a daily basis. These decisions are not always huge life altering moments but those that can have an impact on a baby and a family.

Looking into this challenge, I can see how this would hinder my growth as a leader. Things around us are constantly changing and what has worked in the past may not be the best solution. I will start to explore and seek out challenging opportunities that I can learn from through testing my own skills and abilities. I also want to be able to help others visualize an image of what the future can be like if goals are met. By being exceed those and accomplish the highest goal we have set for ourselves.
As i am a reflector listening comes natural to me. According to B. Tracy, (2008) he says that “leaders are made not born”. I think i will need to improve on my leadership skills so i can be a successful leader, starting with my confidence. A leader needs to be confident in order to influence others.
