Short film is a medium of great value
Today 's media industry is changing rapidly with the contemporary form of short films becoming stronger due to new means of distribution. However, despite having gained popularity recently, short films have proven to be a medium of great value as they are able to express unconventional ideas while using unique styles of representation to portray the director’s views. Directors are able to express these views in a way that is their own can even be considered art. This is seen through Two & Two (2011) by Babak Anvari and Vincent (1982) by Tim Burton.
Two & Two directed by Babak Anvari explores concepts that are seen by our society to be unconventional. His film is centred around the two opposing ideas of rebellion and oppression. The film begins with a slow zooming out camera shot that sets the scene. Right away, Anvari shows the classroom to be an environment under the control of an autocratic group. While a classroom is usually a place for students to grow and learn, full of colour and light, the classroom shown to us is bleak, empty except for a lone map on one of the grey walls and gives off an overall cold aura. The fact that the only source of natural light is from a window outside of the scene and out of reach shows that the children have no connection to the outside world and are trapped inside the classroom. This is also seen through the map which only shows one country as opposed to a world map, signifying the confinement of
The concentration is on comparing and finding the changes that history made to this movie genre, especially considering the gender roles. Results will clearly explain the psyche of society in two different periods, which confirms that people reflect the movies as movies have an impact on people. The Introduction It is often said that the element of surprise makes the movie more interesting and leads the plot. There are many masters of storytelling
Throughout “Stories We Tell” there are many questions and uncertainties pertaining the truth behind Sarah Polley’s biological father, and the affairs that her mother Diane may have been involved in. As we get deeper in the story we found out there have been multiple accusations of Diane being with other guys during her unfaithful marriage with Michael. The real question is who is the creator of this documentaries, Sarah Polley’s, biological father and why did Diane hide such a colossal secret from her family? From the dinner table jokes of Sarah being adopted, to the friends views of Diane 's affairs, there should have been more certainty from an earlier time to who her father
This sense of hostility springs forth from the misconstrued view of literature being the superior art form among the two, extending to the apparent artistic inferiority of cinematic adaptations, which seemingly “betrays” its source material. But the idea of cinema as a potent and dynamic art
In the short story “The Landlady,” by Roald Dahl and the short film, “Tales of the Unexpected” series, Billy Weaver goes to Bath, England where he meets an old landlady. Screenwriters change an author's work because they want to expand their ideas from a book into a movie. In both the story and short film there are many similarities to be found. For example, the story and short film the characters motives are the same.
The image on the television is the same picture as the view outside the window behind him high up on the wall although in color. Through dark imagery, and exaggeration Larson connotes how television locks you and figuratively jails you from the outside world and how though you may be looking at a nature show on tv or whatever the case may be you will not get the same picture as if you were to go out and get the experience for yourself. The satirical strategies the satirist is showing to help illustrate his point is for one, the outside view is in color and is shining light into the dark empty room to right above where the kid can’t notice it. As opposed to the same exact image on the television screen although in black and white shining no source of light at him. What is shown here is bright lights is possibly connected to show the audience what is “the way” meaning the path to choose more wise and a more smart decision to make for a more open free fun filled experience.

For hundreds of years, stories have been passed on from one person to another through the oral tradition and the visual arts. In our society today, film is the dominant form of storytelling. Films shape and inform our opinions of the world. Many people’s only source of information is from films. This can be harmful when the information is false or misguided.
Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.
Short films are an opportunity for creative expression, with the exploration of genres usually not shown in feature films. They are created with the intention of brokering and catalysing change in society’s behaviour and thinking. The centralised focus on specific ideas makes short films an effective medium for social commentary, where awareness pertaining to prominent issues in society is raised. Adam Davidson’s The Lunch Date, a 1990’s short film, and Michelle’s Lehman’s 2008 short film Marry Me both provide insight into a composer’s point of view to a significant extent, despite the different aspects of society being addressed.
To begin my reflection of my of my journey as an English major here at the department I should first say that any work I completed in my freshman and sophomore year will not be included as I do not have access to them. I have chosen to use pieces that were written in my film studies course and Native American Studies. There are four pieces total that will be looked into three of the four will be pieces will be work from my two film studies courses Film Theory and Criticism and Japanese Film Directors, the remaining one piece as stated above will be from Native American Studies. Initially when signing up for the course in Film Theory and Criticism, I did not know what to expect as we all know how to watch a film, summarize it, and give an
I think that the physical environment can play a major role in a child’s learning. If the classroom is very closed off and blocked the children will not feel free to explore their surrounding and become more independent. Ms. Laura’s classroom is very open and spaced out, even though the center itself is built with an open concept and only having half walls to divide the classrooms. She has organized the room in such a way that every though the different centers are clearly laid out, it’s not in such a way that makes them feel enclosed and blocked off from the rest of the room. The environment offers children a variety of different choices all in one area, all of the math, science, and table toys are together, so that a child does not have to search the entire room for something that they are looking for.
In our society today, every individual’s ideas can be exchanged in various creative forms. The short film medium, being a form of social commentary, is a pertinent driving force behind shifts in personal values. Thus short films as a textual form have great value and impact to society due to their versatile delivery. Steve Cutts’ Happiness (2017) is a satirical film whose fast-paced nature prioritises meaning over matter to critique the constant pursuit of happiness in misplaced interests. Erez Tadmor and Guy Nattiv’s Strangers (2003) depicts a singular scenario and builds tension to convey the overcoming of entrenched racial divides.
Baz Luhrmanns contribution to the art of film, brings about a flamboyant and revitalizing side to the industry. Through the use of cinematic language, his story telling techniques and belief in the theatrical cinema come to life. Baz Luhrmann has a very distinctive directing approach with particular techniques that define his style. He presents his films as if he were telling a story, which he invites you into. His stories are simple and he tends to give away the ending at the beginning of the film, which intrigues you to find out more about what had taken place.
Throughout the years, the auteur theory slowly ensconced itself as an essential key to film analysis, providing a specific guideline to evaluate a director’s film. One of the most
Today there has been an increase in the awareness of mental health. In the sense that society has begun to take notice of how mental health effects each individual differently. The media has begun to incorporate a variety of illnesses to entertain to their audience. However, many have questioned if the media is accurately portraying these mental disorders. I chose to compare two popular movies Frankie & Alice and the 2007 version film Sybil.
