Sexist Segregation Plastered onto doorways, water fountains and in store windows, large signs read “White’s Only”. America separated children from one another and these children grew up not knowing how to interact with those of the opposite race. Over the course of history the United States outlawed segregation, and now it is common knowledge that segregation is a despicable act. Nevertheless, there is currently a new outbreak of segregation in the form of single gender schools. Parents often choose to enroll students in single gender schools because they have a reputation of being academically rigorous, or because they believe the opposite gender obstructs their child from a proper education. These views are the same as white individuals believing that allowing black individuals to use the same facilities as them decreases the effectiveness or value of the facilities. America should eliminate single gender schools because they give privileged students more opportunities, promote negative gender stereotypes, and segregate students causing others to be judge them by gender rather than character. To begin, the opposition argues that single gender schools increase learning productivity by removing learning distractions and pressure from the opposite gender. A two year project in six California public schools showed that, “single-gender classes actually exasperated teasing and disruptive behavior among boys and cattiness among girls” (Jost n.pag.).
