Kendra Cherry, a Psychology expert defines self esteem as a person 's overall sense of self-worth or personal value. Self-esteem is often seen as a personality trait, which means that it tends to be stable and enduring. Self-esteem can involve a variety of beliefs about the self, such as the appraisal of one 's own appearance, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors (Cherry, 2015). People who spend countless hours on social media networks do so for their own self-esteem. This can be said the same for narcissists as well. Frederick Rhodewalt, author of “Narcissism” and an expert in Psychology defines narcissism as a trait characterized by an inflated self-image and addiction to fantasy, by an unusual coolness and composure shaken only when the narcissistic confidence is threatened, and by the tendency to take others for granted or to exploit them (2014). They worry that others with low self esteem will try and exploit their own weaknesses. OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can play a big role in a person 's addiction to social media. The strong addiction to the social media network can affect a person’s personality, whether they have a low self esteem wishing to boost it on social media or a narcissistic personality and wishing to keep their self esteem high. The addiction to want to check their social media profile every chance they get can have a negative reinforcement on their personality as a whole. On the positive side of things, constant stimulation from social media can help a person find a group that they find themselves to fit in. Although it does lower a person 's skills to be able to communicate face to face, they can interact with people with similar interests.
