The agents of socialization play a huge role when it comes to institutionalized prejudice in the United States. These are the biggest influence on mankind and they help determine what we think about certain things and how we handled ourselves during slavery and the Jim Crow Era.
Family is definitely the most important influence we have in our lives. They are the ones that teach us what morals and values we are to have and the way we should treat people. Children that grew up during the slavery era were definitely influenced by their families to have a negative connotation when it comes to black people. If you were a kid and you lived on a plantation that your father owned, much like the one Angelica lived on and you saw the way slaves were treated and how they were talked to, you would think that it was normal and that’s the way blacks were to be treated. You would think it was okay for the blacks to be degraded and beaten when they misbehaved. If this was all you saw as a child, you would grow up to have the same mindset. It’s not the child 's fault, it 's just the way they happened to be socialized. This becomes a cycle that never ended. Children that grew up in these environments then raised their kids to think the same things and so on and so forth. The things you hear and see as a child are the things you will forever hold onto and will always influence you in everything you do. Racist parents raised racist children and those children raised more racist people. It’s
