It has long been recognized that speaking is a crucial passageway that involves effective and interesting ways and resources to master it. According to the linguist Jack C, Richards ' 'The mastery of speaking skills in English is a priority for many second or foreign language learners’’ (1990, p.19).Therefore, as stated by the linguists Bailey and Savage ' 'Speaking in second or foreign language has often been viewed as the most demanding of the four skills (1994, p.7)
However, students feel uncomfortable, frustrated and timid at the moment of either speaking in public or when they speak in front of their peers. As well, monotonous speaking activities, old fashioned classrooms, and many other factors do not allow the students to be motivated, interested or encouraged to speak the target language (English) fluently. Furthermore, as asserted by the experienced VSO teachers Joanna Baker and Heather Westrup ' 'it is important for students to learn to speak English well and for teachers to know how to teach speaking well ' ' (2003, p.1). Hence, teachers need to be more aware of their students ' learning needs and interests through giving them as much encouragement as possible, providing them with the best possible chance and relevant materials rather than, creating a relaxing and motivating atmosphere in the classroom. Only in that way, fluent speakers can express themselves appropriately and without ' 'hesitation ' ' or ' 'afraid of making mistakes ' '
The teacher should,
In the three articles “Do you Speak American” by Robert Macneil, “Why Good English is Good for You” by John Simon, and “Lost in America” by Douglas McGray they all share the same theme that Americans lack the motivation to be culturally diverse and broaden their horizons outside of the American Culture due to the lack of funds. This basically means that Americans lack the motivation to learn more about their culture and other cultures because they focus more on fitting in and doing the same thing as all other Americans. They lose the drive to be different and to educate themselves based on where they came from. In “Do You Speak American”, Macneil emphasizes how even though we have different cultures within America, we are all “Americanized”
According to Rong and Pressle’s, “…oral communication skills in English as a second language require two or three years… Four to twelve years of second-language development are needed for the most advantaged students to reach deep academic proficiency and compete successfully with native speakers.” (87). It is essential for tutors to understand the amount of work and time required for students who are not native speakers. A good strategy in helping students with their academic english proficiency is to help them build their vocabulary.
One of the most important aspects a teacher needs to consider, in my opinion, is to have awareness of the English Language Learners and to make sure we are meeting their individual learning needs. We need to know who they are as a person and what we need to do for them, so that they are academically successful. Our job as educators is to make sure our students succeed and go off to college. “Students who are still in the process of acquiring English are entering colleges and universities at an unprecedented rate.
On the other hand, most students believe that if they are better in pronunciation, they will be more confidence in English. It is also seen that generally pronunciation is neglected in classrooms. Even if pronunciation is taught with considerable amount of time, students should practice individually. Practicing only in classroom is not enough for achieving desirable
Learners will acquire the knowledge from teachers in English lessons and utilize the methods that will help them to improve their
Essentially, the class manifests student-centered backdrop rather than teacher centered… teachers are to prepare classroom activities that are devoted and best facilitate speaking exercises”. Some factors of PBL mentioned above match with Achmad and Yusuf’s suggestion (2014) when discussing to some effective ways to enhance students’ speaking skills. It is clear that the main purpose of language teaching is to enforce EFL students to be more confident, motivated, positive attitudes and to collaborate in group. In term of the importance of speaking ability, Ulas (2008, P. 876) emphasizes that “speaking is the most common and important means of providing communication among human beings. The key to successful communication is speaking nicely, efficiently and articulately, as well as using effective voice projection.
PROPOSAL ENGLISH TEACHING METHOD APPLIED BY ENGLISH COURSE TEACHERS ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF ARTS AND CULTURE UDAYANA UNIVERSITY 2014 By: I Kadek Ari Wiguna (1201305011) CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background English has been an international language which is used and spoken around the world. English becomes the most commonly taught language. It is now taught from young age. Now, children also have the same opportunity in mastering English.
English is known as the international language in the world that make a strong communication between the people of the world, which many developing countries attempt to use from this language while their native tongue is not English. Speaking English may have some positive and negative effects on those countries which English is not their original language. Although in many countries English is thought as a foreign language in schools and universities, some other countries used English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI). Even though some countries believe that English may not use as the Medium of Instruction because by using as EMI day by day the mother language will destroyed and the people will forgot their mother tongue but, others believe that the EMI has played an important role on the development of the developing countries. The purpose of this essay is to examine the benefit of EMI on the countries which English is not their first language and the desire of countries to use EMI rather than as foreign longue.
Everyone is afraid of scrutiny, it’s all a part of being human. But you can’t let it control how you behave, think or communicate. Now, if you have ever met me, you will know that I am not one who fits perfectly in a “normal” group. I don’t play sports, I don’t know how to play an instrument, I don’t even remember how to speak Spanish. So, what do I do?
Teacher is the creator and instructor of the environment, and teacher’s language plays an important role in kid’s second language acquisition. With the help of relevant English teaching references and the author’s rich experience of pre-school English teaching she arrived at the conclusion that accuracy, comprehensibility and repetition of teacher’s language can help enhance the effectiveness of the input and promote the output of students’ language. In English immersion teaching children are immersed in an English environment, and teachers face children only in English. The quality and quantity of language input directly affect the quality and quantity of output . A sufficient amount of input can promote language output.
It can be frustrating to not understand what is being taught, but it can be even more frustrating to not even understand the language. I will reach these student by combining my education and past experiences to be as effective of a teacher as I possibly can.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language is a field that continues to improve its teaching methodologies through research. There are four pillars to learning a new language; these pillars: are: listening, writing, speaking, and reading. The teacher should be aware of the students’ ability in each of the four skills in order to fully employ all four of the skills for a productive lesson. A highly skilled class will be analyzed for this essay and its activities; the level of this class is Master Mind 1C; it is a level that is very advanced and is a little after the beginning phases of independent usage. This essay will address how to improve language pedagogy on the part of the teacher and how language learning can be facilitated for the class
Definition: Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an approach to language teaching which supports the development of learners' abilities to use language fluently and meaningfully. The main function of CLT is teaching communicative competence (Richards, 2005). According to Richards (2005), communicative competence means using language for different purposes and functions, modifying language use according to settings and participants, producing and understanding different text types and continuing communication with limitations in language. Principles of CLT: There are many principles of CLT that basically focus on communication.
The change of paradigm from a traditional second language acquisition (henceforth SLA) perspective to multilingualism has contributed enormously to developing the field of multilingual research. However, findings derived from research on third language acquisition (henceforth TLA) and multilingual education has not been applied in the classroom setting. However, teacher training programmes devoted to deal with the multilingual factor in current language pedagogies have been absent in Europe (De Angelis, 2011) and have been dominated by the English-only policy (Otwinoswka, 2017). For this reason, teachers may have preconceived ideas about various issues in third language (henceforth L3) learning and teaching, especially in multilingual contexts.
Thus, the ability in speaking skill is a crucial and important part of second language learning and teaching process. The mastery of speaking skill in the English language is a priority for many second language or foreign language students. Even though periods of focusing on language form and enhance vocabulary are important in English language learning, but developing the students’ ability to really communicate with English in the classroom are the main goal of an English language teaching. At the end of the study, the students should be able to communicate effectively in English for study, work, and leisure outside the classroom. Therefore, it is essential that English teachers pay great attention in teaching speaking to the students.
