Basketball players grow up wanting to perfect shooting a basketball at an efficient level. Being able to shoot well adds to your complete game. It increases your chances of scoring in the paint, and it eases the game for you and your team. Becoming a great shooter is not as easy as it sounds, it requires countless hours in the gym practicing. But once you put your mind to it, it gets less difficult. All it takes is a proper technique, accuracy, and practice. Prior to shooting the ball, I highly recommend stretching. Stretching helps shooting because it increases muscle flexibility and you gain full range motion in the specific muscle. Keep your knees and hips bent; that way you get off the ground quicker than if you were to catch the ball with straight legs. During a game, show your hands with your palm showing so you can stay ready to shoot at any time. A shooter must be quick adjusting their hands to the correct seam on the basketball upon receiving it. Try positioning the ball with all seams facing one direction as it will provide a better rotation for your shot. Depending on the preference of the player, the shooting hand should be behind the ball while the non-shooting hand is on the side of the ball to help guide it. All fingers should be touching the basketball but spread comfortably wide. It is essential to have a decent, if not great base while shooting a jump shot. Your feet should be slightly narrower than shoulder-width. I say slightly because if they are too narrow, it becomes hard to stay balanced while elevating to shoot. At the same time the feet of the shooter cannot be too wide or else the shooter will not get enough bounce in the jump. Also, position your dominant foot a tad in front of the other one because it will release stress on your shoulder and help with the base of the shot.
