As with all aspects of building design, the goal of the structural design is to safely satisfy the client’s needs while complying with the building codes and local regulations (Matteson, 2012). In addition, one of the three areas of concern that homeowners, architects, and engineers should consider is the design and structural concerns, which address foundations, walls, overhangs, and roofing (Lewis, 2006). The floor, roof, wall, and foundation are the four building systems that work together to provide structural framework of the building. The structural framework acts as the skeleton that provides the form, strength, and stability necessary to support all of the loads that will affect the building (Matteson, 2012). Additionally, a strong structure protects the whole house. Walls must be connected to the roof because walls and roofs can strengthen each other if connected properly (Zhou, 2008). In fact, when considering the forces that act on a building, there is wide range of loads that must be included in the structural design. The weight of the people, furniture, and equipment and the weight of the building itself are probably the first loads that come to mind. However, the building will also need to support all of the loads applied by natural phenomenon such as snow, wind, floods, earthquakes, and the pressure from the soil.
