Importance of sustainable design in South Africa:
“The masterful balance of meeting our own needs without jeopardizing future generations’ ability to do the same”, this term defines sustainable design, a development strategy that is imperative for human survival. This essay emphasise on the importance of this approach in the South African context. The term sustainable design will significantly be defined and the importance of the implementations of this strategy in South Africa.
As stated above the commonly known definition of sustainable design is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is a definition created by Brundtland Commission Sustainable design is based on improving human well-being and the quality of life for all, especially the poor and deprived within the carrying capacity of the supporting ecosystems. It is a process which leads to a better quality of life while reducing the impact on the environment. Its strength is that it acknowledges the interdependence of human needs and environmental requirements. This strategy looks at the equity between countries and continents, races and classes and gender and ages. It includes social development and economic opportunity by aiming to improve food security and eradicate poverty amongst people, to improve the standards of healthcare and education; it wants to achieve gender equality and sustainable economic growth and promotes
