In this modern age, we cannot deny and ignore the importance of English. English is the lingua franca of the world; this is due to English is the only language that truly links the whole world together. Other than that, it will help one to get a scholarship, a better chance of entrée to a university or succeed in an interview. In addition, it has been playing an important role in developing a country for many centuries in sectors such as medicine, engineering, and education. There are three importances of English which are helping one in one’s business, education and for getting a job.
Language, as a main means of communication, plays a very important role because it helps us communicate and interact with each other. By the use of sounds and conventional symbols, we create language, a communication by word of mouth. A language lives for as long as people use it as a native language. English language is the most important language around the world. It is spoken as a first language in many countries and as an international language all around the world.
Since young, I have been learning English and it is my main language because I practice it for various purposes. It is very applicable in Malaysia, a country that consist multiracial population where I often communicate with others in English. Hence English is widely used. Having a Standard English allows writing formal letters and typing official documents to be a lot easier. Following, English will be used as an example to explain standardization process.
First and foremost, English is the most commonly used language among foreign language speakers. When people from different nationalities want to communicate with each other, they will almost always use the English language to do so. English is the language of communication and a necessary bridge between people with different mother tongues. There is no arguing the fact that mastering English will make travelling a whole lot easier, as well as enabling you to connect with more people. Speaking English opens up opportunities immediately and will enhance any carries involving foreign clients and international business partners.

The importance on learning English are able to gain skilful speaking and better opportunities in future. Standard English plays a crucial role in our educational system as the kind of English that all children are expected to be able to use, in speaking as well as in writing. A Standard English is a variety of language that is used by governments, in the media, in schools and for international communication. There are different standard varieties of English in the world such as North American English, Australian English and Indian English. Although these standard varieties differ in terms of pronunciation, there are few differences in grammar them.
This encourages people to learn the particular language thus, makes the language as their second or third language. As a Malaysians, one of the international languages that we familiarised with is English, our second language. Through government initiative, since primary school until university, we, Malaysian students have through on- going learning process of English language. Regardless of the time spent on learning the language, our big question is, “how far our proficiency level in English?” Based on the depth survey conducted by Education First (EF) (as cited in EF English Proficiency English Index 2014, 2014) stated that Malaysia’s competency level in English was the highest among countries in Asia. Surprisingly, we did leave Singapore behind in terms of ranking.
Learning does not only happen at the school premises, and actively learning a language every second of the day is very good practise.
