Millennials are viewed in different ways depending on the environment the Millennial grew up in. Each generation has been know for a major characteristic that the majority of that generation shares. For The Greatest Generation courage, valor, and WWII have been associated with their generation. The Millennial Generation has had varying labels from the generations before them because others cannot seem to pin down who the Millennials really are. Being lazy and narcissistic are the two biggest labels attached to the Millenials so far. If the Millennials are going to be remember for something great they must change their outlook and actions of their lives especially when associating with the other generations. This change must start at the foundation …show more content…
These Millennials have developed an open outlook on life that coincides with the description of the non default setting that Wallace describes in his speech “This is Water”. Wallace's description of the non default setting is the exact opposite of his description of the default setting. In this description an outlook at the lives of others is open and welcome for they see others as not just masses of people but as individuals who are different and unique in every way. Unlike their peers these Millennials strive to have the best outlook on life and commit themselves to treating others with equality that they believe all their fellow Millennials should have. They want a purposeful life full of community and social interaction with those around them. Also they strive to maintain and physically and mentally fit lifestyle that they want to share and teach others how to live this healthy lifestyle. These Millennials view a job as not just a means to an end but also a place where they can engage in their job and positively impact their community. They want to live life taking everything in and getting everything they can out of life's many experiences. Millennials with this mindset look up to, respect, and seek guidance from the generations that have come before theirs. Even with all the positivity and good will these …show more content…
The problem that makes many Millennials become narcissistic and entitled starts with how they want to live life without any help or advice from the generations before them. They expect to be given the keys to the world by their parents more than any generation before them for they believe that in this day and age life should be a breeze. Millennials must evolve from the way of thinking that they should instantly get everything they want to a mindset of hardwork and dedication is how one will have a chance to be successful and respected in the world. Every generation before the Millennial generation has had the mindset of hard work gets the job done, and this philosophy worked wonders for the majority of the worlds generations. If Millennials want to be a great generation and be remembered for amazing contributions to the world they must first change their own mindsets and outlooks on life, then and only then will the older generations finally see who they truly
In the 2013 Time article "The New Greatest Generation," Joel Stein claims that "millennials' perceived entitlement isn't a result of overprotection but an adaptation to a world of abundance"(31). Stein's organizational style appeals to readers because he arranges the article in a way that lures the reader's attention in the beginning, so he can later propose a new outlook. Stein begins describing characteristics of millennials unfavorably in order to overcome those negative characteristics and offer a new, positive perspective. The author initially establishes a negative attitude towards millennials to appeal to the feelings of the older, adult generations. Stein’s structure successfully acknowledges the negative views, for the purpose of
According to Professor Jeffrey Bosworth, in his editorial “Hunting for Hope in Modern America,” he discusses the “screwed” millennial generation and the potential they have to be successful, despite current existing United States problems. Bosworth explains this from three different perspectives: the current issues in America, the positive attributes of the millennial generation, and what the millennial generation should do to succeed. In Bosworth’s opening proposition he elucidates the “[millennial] generation is screwed”. He expounds the millennial generation is predicted to “do worse than the previous generation”.
Generation Y can be looked at as immature and as a generation that should be soothed like a child would be when they fail or fall down and scrape their
With the general assumption that millennials are arrogant, Wallace shares a story to prove to everyone that being arrogant is not worth it (Wallace, 2005). So much more can be done if we focus our energy in thinking in a more positive manner. For instance, he talked about being a little less arrogant, saying “Because a huge percentage of the stuff that I tend to be automatically certain of is, it turns out, totally wrong and deluded. I have learned this the hard way” and further claims “as I predict you graduates will, too.” (Wallace, 2005)
Self-preservation is the protection of oneself from harm or death, a basic instinct that humans have. The millennial generation refers to individuals born between 1980 and 2000. Rob Fournier in his essay “The Outsiders: How Can Millennials Change Washington If They Hate It?”,argues that the only way Millennials will engage in Washington is if they change it. David and Jack Cahn in their introductory chapter to When Millennials Rule offers a solution to this issue by asserting that young people will use their votes to radically change Washington and win the war against the Washington elite.
Once Stein is done comparing himself to Millenials, he then proceeds to defend them. Stein suggest that, “Yes, they check their phones during class, but think about how long you can stand in line with out looking at your phone” (Stein 32). After reading this, this furthers the points that the audience is just like Millennials. This can make the readers begin to question if Millennials are as bad as they tend to make them out to be. The way Stein chose to structure his article is an important factor that helps show the audience the purpose of his
Generation X were born from 1966 to 1976 sometimes referred to as lost generation with stereotype of first generation with “latchkey” kids, exposed to lots of daycare and divorce. Gen X is often characterized as high level of skepticism and some of the worst music to gain popularity. Also, Gen X has the best educated generation with 29% obtaining
She uses stereotypes as one way to prove how predecessor generations feel about millennials, stating that they are just narcissistic, self-absorbed, opinionated, whiny individuals who are uneducated, lack focus and are not responsible (Ellin 205). The main rivalry is between the baby boomers and the millennials because they have opposing perspectives and characteristics. “Millennials have self-confidence and assuredness, and these characteristics can be off-putting to people in older generations who feel that because of their age and experience young people should be more deferential towards them”, says Julie Coates, an adult-learning specialist in River Falls, Wisconsin (Ellin 208).
There’s still hope for the Millennials even though they have a lot to fix with this country. Bosworth argues that even though millennials are “screwed” starting their life that there is still hope for them to be successful. He talks about how the government is already in debt, how the school systems are failing and how government officials can’t agree on anything. The United States has a very poor educational system for K-12th grade but, the coming generations are becoming more technologically inclined then passed generations. Bosworth speaks very informally throughout the speech making him more relatable to by younger people who often talk informally.
The millennials has been giving a bad rap and labeled many things, some included entitled, whiny, and
It’s hard to conceive as to why nothing can work out in my favor at this period of time, but pon my improved perception, brought upon by Wallace’s speech, I was able to apprehend my self-oriented personality and pessimistic stance on life and my decisions, which ultimately displayed the unnecessary negativity and caused me to have a more positive outlook on life, that I should start being more considerate and empathetic towards others, more caring for others, and more aware of what others are going through as well. To draw a close, Wallace offers an ideal explanation that if people don’t begin to exercise the flexibility they have when it comes to choosing how to think or add meaning to their routine experiences, they have nothing to gain and life loses its beauty. “This is Water” not only sends the message that humans are naturally self-centered, but also suggests that humans are slaves to their own brains, and the only method to escape that madness is to change their perspective on their
Based on the film, the Merchants of Cool, it can be seen that the millennial cultural practices are different from how cultural practices were practiced in the past. This can be understood from examining
An opinion may be appealing to the ear; however, appealingness does not make a statement accurate. In Joel Stein's article, “The New Greatest Generation,” his overall message is generalized to the idea of what effect do millennials have on society. In the first portion of his writing, Stein criticizes millennials’ ways of life using statistical data and stereotypes the entire generation as indolent and selfcentered. The second portion of Stein’s article is a counterargument that millennials are not a fruitless generation, and that their way of life may be beneficial to all. Stein creates a compelling argument, however his counter argument is entirely opinionated making his writing an unreliable source.
One generation being dubbed the greatest is certainly a lofty notion, but I think that this one fit it well. They lived through one of the worst economic times in American history, their ingenuity led to major technological advances, and they took down Hitler and fascism. I think that calling this particular generation the greatest is well deserved, their resilience and courage lead America to new heights and out of the depression. They lived through the Great Depression where unemployment reached 25%, the dust bowl ravaged the Great Plains, and people went without for almost a decade. Their aptitude led to color TV, the microwave, and the atomic bomb.
Some people argue that Millennials are entitled, self-centred, and uninterested in anything other than their own Facebook and Twitter page. This generation has been known to have high self-esteem, assertiveness, self-importance, narcissism, and high expectations. Having a higher self-esteem comes with many positive outcomes and benefits. People high in self-esteem claim to be more likable, attractive and make better impressions on others in a working environment than other people with low self-esteem. Millennials with greater self-importance are the ones who help others and care about large social
