Malta, being a very small island with very limited natural resources, relies heavily on the tourism industry to generate both income and employment since a big proportion of tourism expenditure goes on accommodation, food and transport. Throughout the years, Malta has been branded as a sun and sea destination and this has served the country well, attracting millions to its shores.
However, although such numbers bring with them large economic growth as well as the possibility to better the country’s infrastructure, said benefits are often accompanied by several negative environmental and social impacts that result from high density tourism.

As the hotel in mention is a sea-side hotel, it can rely on alternate methods of generating freshwater, namely the reverse osmosis water treatment system. This filtration system takes seawater and using a high pressure membrane it removes the salt content present, therefore making it suitable for human consumption. Although, reverse-osmosis is an energy intensive method of producing freshwater, you are still reducing the impact on the water table. Another key factor amongst the water safety measures is the re-use of grey-water; the product of waste water from showers, wash-hand basins and washing machines. Once filtered, grey water does not contain any chemicals and toxins, and can therefore be used to water plants and other vegetation which surround the property. Another water conservation initiative would be to install low-flow toilets and shower heads. Copy machines can be defaulted to double-sided printing reducing the amount of paper used. Automatic paper-towel dispensers in back-of-house and bathrooms ensure that there is no excess wastage. Placing shampoo, conditioner and body wash dispensers in gyms instead of small individual plastic bottles will also reduce waste considerably.
Solid waste management can drastically reduce the negative impact on the environment. Recycling is one of the main ways one can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Small recycling bins in the guest rooms urges guests to separate waste and participate in the hotel’s efforts to go green. A similar initiative would be to install recycling receptacles in all back of house areas.
