Chapter two in the textbook Reflect & Relate an Introduction to Interpersonal Communication by Steven McCornack talks all about what “self” is and how to achieve complete fulfillment for one’s self which is also known as self-actualization. The components of self, as described in the book are, “ . . . self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem” (McCornack 39). Self-awareness is the idea in which one can take a moment to move feelings, beliefs, and other external influences aside and just evaluate oneself in a holistic perspective that is not skewed by opinions of others, etc. Having the ability to actually think about who one is brings a lot of power and mental stability in such a way that allows for improvement.
This theory was made by Michael Argyle (1925- 2002), who was a social psychologist. In the late 1960s he studied social skills, body language, non-verbal communication and interpersonal behaviour. In this study, he found that non-verbal signals can be much more important and useful than verbal communication when trying to trigger peoples’ attitudes and feelings. His research showed and found that the stronger the relationship between the people communicating so with close friends for example the much better eye contact. However, when the relationship is not very strong so when speaking to a stranger people don’t have very good eye contact and they tend to look away when talking.

Recently, in order to describe something that holds spirit and effect without having form, but having an effect on the actual, the word ‘virtual’ was used. Virtual reality is developing all the time and has found hitches not formerly considered. Applications of Virtual reality are starting to find their way into normal society.
By definition, computer-mediated communication (CMC) is communication about or by means of computer technology (Thurlow, Lengel, & Tomic, 2004). The transition of computers from highly specialized technology to personal possessions contributed to the increase in investigations relating to CMC (Thurlow, Lengel, & Tomic, 2004). The study of CMC has been widely applied, allowing for discussions of all forms of human communication via the means of a computer. Some of those disciplines through which CMC has been studied include psychology (Gackenbach & Ellerman, 1998; Kiesler, Siegel, & McGuire, 1984), politics (Dahlberg, 2001; Hacker & van Dijk, 2000), and education (Berge & Collins, 1995; McComb, 1994). It is in being virtual that we are human and human nature wants individuals to experience life through the figure of culture. In result, culture is the “killer app” which leads to consequences of a social life such as selfhood and society. Boellstorff’s goal throughout the book is to restore the idea of ‘virtual’ by examining virtual worlds in their own terms and phrases. In the first section, the author investigates both the historical progressions and changes of the virtual world and argues that the ideas of posthuman is deceiving.
Far too often, humans are checking out of real life and checking into a virtual world. In the article, The IRL Fetish, written by Nathan Jurgenson, there are many negative references to the effects that technology has had on our world in this day and age. Face to face conversations are currently seen as something special instead of something that occurs in everyday life. When people are not scrolling through social media, they are constantly thinking about who could be online and what they could possibly post next. There is an ongoing problem with human infatuation with the online world and all that it entails.
However, human interactions throughout time have constantly changed and evolved to suit the way we live. In the modern era, human interactions consist of mainly digital media such as the use of mobile phones, social media and networking sites. Our lives have become so heavily involved with media and technology due to their popularization in the last few decades. Initially when I registered for Interpersonal Communications it was solely to fulfill my USEM requirements and I reckoned the class as nothing more than an obstacle. My sour attitude did not last though, my first class on my very first day of college was my communications class and I felt extremely welcomed and intrigued. These feelings were reinforced when the second day of class brought an interactive outside activity. I happily participated in and the activity it created an enthusiastic impression within me for the classes to follow.
