Natural landscape is being torn apart, large rifts in the land are being formed, and aquifers are suffering permanent and irreversible harm. The cause of all this is the unregulated pumping of groundwater out of aquifers by California 's farmers in the Central Valley. As water is drawn out of these reservoirs, their structural integrity fails and they consequently collapse, causing the land above to sink. Once the aquifers collapse, their maximum capacity is reduced, so they cannot be fully refilled during wet periods. Less water will be stored and pumped, which is a major concern for drought years in the future.
This increases the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and chronic respiratory disease. This is happening because the water that usually flows into the Salton Sea is being diverted away and being sent to big cities for usage. Farmers are using less water which means less water is being drained into the sea. This is causing the dry up. If the Salton Sea starts to dry up severely both wildlife and humans will be affected.
However, it 's not only just because of man-made reasons. The coastal marshes disappearing can also be affected by natural causes. Sediment is being deposited into a river delta increasing the weight, which causes the entire area to sink (p. 11). Depositing may sound like a positive cause, but however if the course of the sediment changes then no new sediment will continue to be deposited. Another natural cause is oceans and hurricanes.
Many colonists died because of the environment. The main reason the enviroment killed them was because of the contamination of the water, and tides. The contamination of the water happened when they dumped their waste into the river. The colonist thought the waste would wash up but instead it “tended to fester rather than flush away” according to document A written by Denni Blanton of William and Mary College. They would later drink the water and they would get ill and eventually die from diseases.
Marine life habitats are getting destroyed, marine life is declining everyday, how and where the garbage is getting into the oceans, and the drinking water is becoming seriously unsafe to drink. Water Pollution is a huge environmental problem that has serious effects on marine habitats, animals, and water quality. BP1: The world's marine habitat has been getting worse because of how bad the pollution has gotten. “ Over 80% of marine pollution comes from land based activities “ (source 5 ). This quote explains how most of the water pollution is caused by human activity.
Climate change will affect communities in the north by destroying the best way to transport things. Finally, the sea level rise and flooding is a big problem people-wise. Flooding causes millions in damage that sometimes cannot be reversed. Flooding is encouraged by climate change because of the increase in moisture trapped in the air, and rain happening earlier in the year and falling on still frozen ground. Houses being destroyed by increased water also leave people homeless and cost a lot to fix.
However, an overabundance of some nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, impairs water quality. “Agriculture is the largest source of pollution to the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams.” quotes the Washington Post (Baker, 2015). About 50% of phosphorus and 40% of nitrogen dumped into the bay stems from agricultural runoff. According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, “Each year, roughly 300 million pounds of polluting nitrogen reaches the Chesapeake Bay—about six times the amount that reached the bay in the 1600s.”(cfb.org). The major sources of the excess nutrients comes from over fertilization of crops with animal manure seeping into waterways, and animals having direct access to waters where waste is carried into the watershed (Baker, 2015).
Every year precipitations ends in the spring around May and remains absent until late November. The waterways and landscapes of native California supported an abundance of wildlife. The powerful rivers provided homes for salmon and steelhead fish. The Great Central Valley is marked by vast lowland floodplains that facilitated the growth of many species of mammals. The San Francisco Bay was at one time one of the most productive estuaries in the country.
Water is the most important component found on the surface of the earth because it is source of life for living creatures. However, water pollution has become a global concern. Water pollution can have several forms from diverse sources. It is expected that there will be a lack of clean water in next few decades due to pollution. Nile river water in Egypt is the focus of attention of many studies due to many reasons.
With the current growth of the world’s population and the increase in demand for water in the agricultural industry, the issue of water scarcity is very likely to get worse and worse (Gupta, 2016). This essay will therefore critically discuss water scarcity and how one can prevent a war fought over water, as well as how one can save water and implement change to better our future nationally and globally. 2. The Importance of Water With two thirds of the earth 's surface covered by water and the human body consisting of 75 percent of it, it is clear that water is one of the core elements responsible for life on earth (Anderson, 1986). Water is very important to us because human bodies, as well as animals, cannot function without water in their systems.
Serious Drought California has been going through a major problem. The problem is water, California is going through a big drought. Lacking on water is a major problem because water is needed for almost everything. California has one of the largest food manufacturing in plants. Farmers use most of our water for growing crops and raising animals.
