Do rainy days get you down? You might not be the only one. Research suggests that weather influences mood (Grohol, 2014). Various aspects of weather’s conditions and effects can influence a person’s mood and behaviour. Carolyn Gregoire wrote that weather has an impact on a person’s mood and with global warming contributing to drastic changes in weather patterns, weather’s effects on mood will escalate in the near future (2014). Weather conditions influence different personality types in different ways as well (Grohol, 2014). Researchers conducted a study with 415 participants to examine their mood in specific weather situations (Klimstra et al., 2011). Their research concluded with the following: 17% (called ‘summer lovers’) felt happier, less …show more content…
Studies have shown that warm weather influences the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep, which is essential to the mind’s overall wellbeing as well as relaxation during a sleep cycle (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012). Heat itself is not a major factor, but high humidity associated with heat is what causes wakefulness (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012). The REM stage is decelerated as the skin perspires more due to high humidity (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012). This is because wakefulness is the only stage of the sleep schedule that is able to cope with high levels of humidity (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012). As the body is not able to successfully complete the wakefulness stage and continue to the REM stage, optimal levels of sleep are never achieved. This, in turn, explains why energy conversion is influenced by high humidity levels, as the body needs a sufficient amount of rest in order to successfully convert energy. Furthermore, on cold days the body’s urination increases and produces more adrenaline (stress hormone) than on warm days (BaHammam, n.d.). As these hormones and bodily secretion rise, stress, blood pressure and tension rise as well (BaHammam, n.d.). Quality of sleep is negatively influenced by these effects and as a result, sleep quality is poor. As sleep quality is poor, the body does not have sufficient rest time to re- energize and relax, which then leads to lack of sufficient energy throughout the day. Therefore, it can be stated that low temperature levels throughout the evening influence the body’s energy conversion and lead to lack of energy throughout the day. Aside from the effects of hot and cold temperatures on energy conversion, weather patterns influence the mind’s ability to
We all had fun regardless of whether or not we had a bad round, or if the weather was bad. At Mahoney, the weather did worsen a bit as the day wore on. There was this sharp rain that made you squint when it came straight to your face. By the end of the first nine holes, both my socks were soaked but I still was playing well. This weather was bad, but not as terrible as my first tournament, which was beyond
Weather has many different effects on a person for example, rain can have a scene depicted as gloomy or sad. Many stories include this logic into their books to further the tone of the story. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley the weather is associated with the mood of Victor Frankenstein and his creation. By including these comparisons between moods and weather shows each character's mood when it is not shown or made clear to the reader. When Victor Frankenstein is happy and at a calm mindset the weather is depicted as similar such as when he is in his childhood home and thinks he is worry free.
That's Cleveland weather for you! But that's what makes me adore this city! Even with its "ghetto" glam and the "hood rat" street scene. I truly take a deep pleasure Cleveland.
Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.
In the short story "The Lamp at Noon" by Sinclair Ross, the theme of how weather affects mood is explored, highlighting the psychological impact of environmental factors on human emotions. The story portrays the isolation and despair of a couple, Ellen and Paul, as they struggle to survive a devastating dust storm on their farm, which leads to heightened tensions and emotional distress. Sinclair Ross uses the harsh and unforgiving weather to symbolize the couple's inner turmoil and the destructive effects of human isolation and environmental degradation on the human psyche. Ultimately, the story suggests that environmental factors such as weather have a profound impact on human emotions, and that this impact can be both physical and psychological,
Not only does the weather affect the interactions between characters, but it also affects the general mood of the atmosphere. The first occasion that one notices this is when Nick, Daisy, and Gatsby were all together for tea. “The day agreed upon was pouring rain... An hour later the door opened nervously and Gatsby in a white flannel suit, silver shirt, and gold-colored tie hurried in. ”(88)
On an island, one would expect bright, sunny weather, but the boys (and readers) are met with quite the opposite. The text states, “The undergrowth at the side of the scar was shaken and a multitude of raindrops fell pattering.” (Golding 4). Throughout the novel, the weather worsens two times; when the plane crashes and before Simon dies. Plane crashes and deaths are tragic events, and it seems as though every time something tragic happens, the weather is impacted as well.
Unlike Merryweather High, Glen A. Wilson High School is located in the lovely city of Hacienda Heights, California, where the sun shines bright and rain is scarce. Having the sun out literally brightens everyone’s day, so being sad on a sunny day is quite infrequent for me. I believe that weather do indeed impact one’s mood and how they feel on a day-to-day basis, so Melinda’s mood changing with the weather is possible. One difference between the high schools are the structure of them. Merryweather High was set indoors with halls and lockers while Wilson is out in the open and lockers are nonexistent.
Weather Representing Emotions Normally weather and emotions are not associated, but throughout the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald makes multiple references comparing the feelings of Jay Gatsby to the weather outside. He uses rain to represent the times of sadness or awkward situations. When those moods uplifted the clouds would break, and the sun would shine. Other times he would use heat to represent times of anger, or tension.

Sleep deprivation is the lack of sleep needed to function to full potential. While college is known for staying up all night, and cramming for exams, this term of sleep deprivation is starting to take a serious toll. Over the years the sleeping patterns of students attending college and universities has changed dramatically. Studies show that as time goes on the average night of sleep students are getting is decreasing drastically (Jensen, 2003). The way students are falling into this lack of sleep are by forming an irregular sleep-wake cycle, which consists of getting little to no sleep during the week, then on weekends catching up on all the missed sleep.
In many poems, poets use nature as a metaphor for human life. In "Storm Warnings" by Adrienne Rich, she uses an approaching storm as a metaphor for an emotional storm inside herself. Although, there is a literal meaning of the poem. There really is an incoming storm. Rich uses structure, specific detail, and imagery to convey the literal and metaphorical meanings of the poem.
Here, is where most of our dreams occur and is where all our arm and leg muscles become paralyzed to prevent us from reenacting our dreams; not only this but brain activity flourishes (“sleep”,n.d). While this does not directly affect why individuals should sleep more, the amount you increase or restrict daily hrs, does. With such vital processes and stages occuring while sleeping, it comes as no surprise that affecting the number of yours you sleep directly affects your health, both for positive and for negative. It also lies here where the major benefits of sleeping more take place
Neuroticism increases based on environments as well however, it would be a temporary effect
