In situ conservation is carried out in the following areas: nature reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and world heritage sites. PAs are “areas especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity and associated cultural resources, which are managed through legal or other effective means”. These have long been core elements of national as well as regional conservation strategies. With the objective of preserving biodiversity (flora in addition to fauna) and the natural environment inside diverse forest sorts, three types of protected area under different IUCN protected area management groups are demarcated in the Bangladesh Wildlife Preservation Act, 1974.
Wildlife sanctuary, an area maintained as an undisturbed breeding ground for wild fauna and in which the habitat is included for the continued well-being of the resident or migratory fauna. Countrywide park, a comparatively large place of natural splendor to which the members of the general public have right of entry for leisure, education and research, and wherein wildlife is secured. The area of national botanical garden at Mirpur is 84.2 ha consisting of 306 tree species (total 33,413 plants), 441 shrub species (20,746 plants), 201 herb species (13,092 plants) and 62 vine/climber species (1,190 plants). The total number of families of trees, herbs and shrubs are 134 (Anonymous, 2014). Boldha garden covers an area of 1.15 ha with a total of 18,000 trees, herbs, and shrubs from 820 species and 92 families. Along with these two botanical gardens maintained by DoF, different public Universities of Bangladesh are maintaining botanical gardens as their teaching and research facilities.
