The act of volunteering is more than the time spent at an organization. Volunteering is about learning not only how to complete a task, but the lessons gained through the experience. In this year’s Senior Project, I was lucky enough to participate in the construction of a playground with the KaBOOM organization. While volunteering at this site, I was able to learn about the importance of youth development programs and their effects on children and youth in the community. In this paper I wish to focus on the importance of youth development programs, my experience with my organization, as well as other organizations paving the way for youth success. KaBOOM is a wonderful organization that is making a change one playground at a time. KaBOOM was …show more content…
From the initial idea to the completed structure.” I was shocked to hear his response to be “the entire process is about 6-8 months”. (Kur-Lasky) I had imagined that building a playground would take a longer time considering negotiations, processing paperwork, let alone the construction of play structure. However, thinking back to the build and seeing the playground built in the matter of 8 hours, I can understand that the process is not as long as I imagined. Overall the entire experience was completely mind-blowing as I saw our diverse group of people make a change in our …show more content…
This organization has been active since 1968 marking its 46th year of empowerment. (Special Olympics) Living with a disability has to be one of the most difficult challenges a person can be faced with. The mission of the Special Olympics is to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing gifts, skills and friendships with families and the community. (Special Olympics) Similar to KaBOOM’s goals providing a play area in which children can express themselves through physical fitness and social interactions. The Special Olympics wishes to show the physical and mental accomplishes that these brave people overcome as the display their valor at these events. Organizations like Special Olympics break stereotypes and promote the strength and courage that each athlete possesses in these events. Volunteering is indeed more than the time spent at an organization. For me, the time I have spent allowed me to learn an important lesson about the power of unity and the reward that follows. Though many organizations may have a different goal or mission there is always one thing that is similar between them, to help. My time spent at KaBOOM has allowed me to see this similarity of youth development in the organizations, whether it was social skills, physical fitness or leadership. This experience has permitted me to understand the power I possess
The bigger playground has a bike track and multiple riding tykes for the children. Along the fence are several different sensor activities and a picnic table on the porch. The director has removed monkey bars from previous inspection. Photographs: none were taken at inspection.
For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors.
The present of Arizona Gymnastics has organization saga that only fits their needs for the gymnasts, but the coaches have tight communication that goes along with both the athletes and the roles that happens behind the sport itself. The gymnasts have a structure that is beneficial for their special needs to be the best as a team. Being responsible of not only being on time to go to practices and classes, but there are other areas such as volunteering for the community that they do that helps them get to know the community and for the community know the
In the discussion of deaf students wanting a college only for deaf students, I was able to relate that closely to Philadelphia Power Play. There is nothing wrong with an organization only allowing daily power wheelchair users to participate in their events. Rather, it builds a strong community amongst the people using power wheelchairs. This may be the only opportunity for the hockey players to play a sport with other power wheel chair players, let alone see thirty of their friends playing in power wheelchairs as well. It is significant to keep in mind how important these organizations are that cater to one specific group of
In the year 2000 Special Olympics campaign was setting goals to achieve. Some of their goals were to raise $120 million dollars and have at least 1 million participants. A few months later Special Olympics athletes from all over the nation finally meet one another. They all provide ideas and resolutions
The first organization I enjoyed learning a bit about was the National Indian Youth Council or (NIYC). The organization
Their Mission is, “We are committed to providing quality comprehensive services for the child and his/her family. Our activities are geared toward nurturing the growth and development of the children enrolled, involving parents in the program and providing them with opportunities to enhance their understanding and knowledge.”. This is where I actually did my service. I was placed in a classroom with 21 kids from the age 3-5. Immediately after walking into the room, a number of them got up from their storytime and hugged us and drug us over to sit with them.
I was introduced to Special Olympics through NHS. I am now an Adaptive Partner and work with the athletes in my school. I have gone sledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and played basketball with these kids. I have made a lot of new friends and memories through Special Olympics. Special Olympics has taught me a variety of life skills.
Since 1902, parents and volunteers have helped the 4-H program develop successful leaders, build young minds, and set the path for 4-Hers to take on the world. Volunteers and parents are a major reason for 4-H’s success in youth development. Volunteers and parents help make 4-H possible. Without 4-H volunteers and parents the program would not have the mentors, leaders, and guidance that the 4-H members need in order to learn the new skills that 4-H has to offer (“Positive Youth”). The 4-H Youth Development Program (YDP) strives to provide quality leadership for youth participating in 4-H Youth Development Programs, events, and activities.
Overall, this board meeting made me feel as if I made a difference in my
Small changes can make a big difference. I work everyday with students in the six grade and while they live in a multicultural city, the majority of them don’t have any idea what is available to them outside of the ward they currently live. As I’m exploring my options for service after City Year, the only place I believe I can further continue making differences is at the Peace Corp. One of the main reasons why I’m attracted to the Peace Corps is because the volunteers come from all kinds of backgrounds.
The organization was created at Iowa State University but its ideas spread throughout the state and the nation. The goals
Overall, the entire process of my Eagle Scout Project has truly marked my transition from being a child to a young adult. My Eagle Scout Project has given me the privilege of helping my community. I learned what it truly takes to perform a project, start to finish. My passage from childhood to adulthood was demonstrated by my dedication and commitment throughout this project, which has shown me the potential I have to make a difference in my

Analysis of the Special Olympics has allowed me to experience the hard work and dedication of so many outstanding athletes. meeting these athletes with disabilities that would make anyone wonder how can they still smile and be happy. The determination and strength that they have is beyond words. The Special Olympics is an outstanding organization that brings awareness and allows those disabilities to compete and win. From the staff and volunteers to the families one can only walk away with the attitude that nothing is impossible in life.
