Humans are instinctively interested in becoming friends with others that they choose at all ages. People choose the friends among their peers or other groups of people according to some features and characteristics. Hartup and Stevens (1999) discuss that being a complex issue itself, the process of developing friendships may be complex and controversial. Undoubtedly, friends have a direct impact on a person’s well-being; however, these influences can be controlled and stabilized in order to constitute a friendship which is beneficial for an individual. Peer characteristics and behaviors which are supported by the concept of having common interests and gathering for the same purposes in the activities are crucial in terms of influencing relationships that occur among the individuals (Simpkins, 2015). Furthermore, in comparison to the real-life friendship making situations, the modern and globalized world requires to be consistently active in the social media too. There is no doubt that at every stage of the relationships, friends have particular influences based on the different causes. These influences can differ from one another in terms of whether the interaction is established in real life or virtual platform. First of all, friendship performs one of the crucial roles in one’s lifespan as it generates positive outcomes. At very early ages, school-aged children should learn to critique and provide detailed and meaningful feedbacks starting at schools. As they are peers and have opportunities to reflect on their opinions, they develop communication and evaluation skills and abilities (Reynolds, 2009). During class discussions and projects they learn how they should approach their peers and behave in an environment with a group of people. Consequently, school friendships must prepare the youngsters for the community in which they will take part and apply their earliest experiences that they have gained from their friends who are either close or just acquaintances. Furthermore, the drawbacks of establishing close relationships with social media friends are considered to be one of the most debatable issues.
